Buses and trams in the Canary Islands will remain free throughout 2025, thanks to an exceptional provision in a Royal Decree Law approved today by the Spanish Council of Ministers. This decision ensures that residents of the archipelago can continue to enjoy 100% discounted public transport services, as they have in the past year.
Announcement by the Canary Islands’ Minister of Public Works

Pablo Rodríguez, the Minister of Public Works, Housing, and Mobility for the Canary Islands, expressed satisfaction with the extension of the measure. “Following numerous discussions with the Ministry of Transport, we have secured this benefit for 2025. The Spanish Government has acknowledged our request, and today’s Council of Ministers has officially extended the 100% discount for buses and trams,” he stated.
Positive Impact on Public Transport Usage
The Minister highlighted the broader benefits of the initiative, emphasizing that it has gone beyond merely combating inflation. “The data we provided to the Ministry shows a significant rise in public transport usage, with over 40% of new users joining the system. This measure has effectively encouraged the use of sustainable public transport options,” he explained.
Budgetary Challenges and Future Plans

While the initiative has been successful, Rodríguez noted budgetary concerns. “The current funding allocated to support free public transport is insufficient, as the actual cost of the programme has exceeded initial estimates. The expenses now surpass 140 million euros,” he said. The Minister affirmed that his department would continue discussions with the Ministry of Transport to address these budgetary challenges.
Encouraging Sustainable Travel
This policy is expected to further promote public transport as a primary mode of travel across the Canary Islands, benefiting both residents and the environment. The initiative reflects a broader commitment to sustainability and accessibility, providing a reliable and cost-free option for daily commutes and travel across the islands.
