The long-awaited reopening of Playa Jardín in Puerto de la Cruz has been officially scheduled, with authorities confirming that the beach will be accessible for bathing again in approximately six months.
Progress on Wastewater Treatment and Infrastructure
The Puerto de la Cruz Town Council, in collaboration with the Canary Islands government, has announced that construction and repair efforts at the Orotava Valley treatment plant are in their final stages and are expected to be completed in the coming months.
Additionally, significant progress has been made on the repair of the Punta Brava underwater outfall, which was a key factor in the beach’s closure. These updates were confirmed following a meeting with technical experts and reported by the Canary Islands public television network, TVC.
Background: A Year-Long Closure

Playa Jardín, one of the most popular beaches in Puerto de la Cruz, was forced to close last summer due to a malfunction in the underwater outfall system, which led to wastewater spills in the area. Investigations are still ongoing to determine whether additional sewage emissions originated from other sources.
Recognising the urgency of the situation, the Canarian Government, the Tenerife Island Council, and the Puerto de la Cruz Town Council have been working in coordination to resolve the issue and prevent future environmental risks.
Economic and Social Impact

The prolonged closure of Playa Jardín has had significant consequences for both residents and local business owners, many of whom rely on the steady flow of visitors to sustain their livelihoods. The reopening of the beach is expected to bring economic relief, restoring the appeal of the area as a key tourist destination.
With infrastructure improvements progressing steadily, authorities remain optimistic that the planned reopening will proceed without further delays, allowing both locals and tourists to once again enjoy the iconic beach in Puerto de la Cruz.
