Storms and rain in the Canary Islands: A weather warning for Thursday

Storms and showers are expected across the Canary Islands on Thursday, with possible thunderstorms, strong north-westerly winds, rough seas, and light frosts in high areas.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a weather warning for the Canary Islands for Thursday, 6 March, due to expected unstable conditions across the archipelago. Cloudy intervals and scattered showers will dominate the forecast, particularly in the north of the mountainous islands as well as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Some areas may experience locally heavy rainfall and isolated thunderstorms.

Temperatures will remain stable, with north-westerly winds prevailing throughout the islands.

Mountain Weather: Light Frosts Possible

At higher altitudes, especially on the summits of Tenerife and La Palma, temperatures will drop, leading to a possibility of light frosts in the early hours of the day.

Maritime Conditions: Rough Seas Expected

The weather will also impact sea conditions, with a north or north-westerly wind at force 2 to 4, increasing locally to force 3 to 5, causing areas of moderate swell to rough seas.

  • On the southwest, southeast, and southern coasts, winds will be lighter, variable at force 1 or 2, with sea conditions ranging from calm to slight swell.
  • Swells from the north or northwest are forecast, with waves reaching 1 to 2 metres, particularly in northern coastal areas.
