AEMET announces arrival of new DANA system over the Canary Islands

A new high-altitude weather system is set to impact the Canary Islands, bringing rain and dusty winds to parts of the archipelago.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a forecast warning for the Canary Islands, indicating the potential arrival of another DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos or Isolated High-Altitude Depression) from the west. This meteorological phenomenon is expected to bring cloudy or overcast skies and occasional rainfall, particularly over the westernmost islands. Meanwhile, the eastern islands may experience the arrival of calima — a dry, dusty wind typically blown in from the Sahara — by late afternoon.

General Weather Outlook for Mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands

According to AEMET, high atmospheric pressure will continue to dominate across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands throughout Thursday. For most of these areas, skies will be mostly clear or lightly clouded.

  • Light rain is only expected along the eastern Cantabrian coast, in parts of the north of the Iberian Peninsula, and along the northern slopes of the Pyrenees, where precipitation could fall as snow at elevations between 1,400 and 1,800 metres.
  • Morning low clouds will appear across various regions in the northern half of the country but are expected to dissipate later in the day.

By the evening, cloud cover will begin to increase in the eastern interior, with a low probability of isolated showers. Occasional showers may also occur in Mallorca and Menorca, albeit with low confidence.

Weather Conditions in the Canary Islands

In the Canary Islands, the approaching DANA from the west is expected to affect the western islands first, with cloudy skies and intermittent rainfall. In the eastern islands, there is a chance of calima arriving late in the afternoon, bringing reduced visibility, dry conditions, and a sandy haze.

Temperature Trends

AEMET anticipates that temperatures will remain similar to the previous day, with slight variations in different parts of the country:

  • Slight to moderate increases in maximum temperatures across the northern Peninsula.
  • Minimum temperatures will rise along the eastern Andalusian coast, but fall across the Iberian and Cantabrian regions.
  • Light frosts are expected in mountainous areas in both the northern and south-eastern halves of Spain.

Wind Conditions

  • Over the mainland and Balearic Islands, light northerly winds will dominate.
  • The Ebro region will experience moderate Cierzo winds.
  • In Ampurdán and the north of the Balearics, moderate Tramontana winds are expected, with stronger intervals.
  • The northwest coast of the peninsula will see moderate north-easterly winds.
  • In the Alborán Sea, light to moderate westerly winds are forecast, gradually easing throughout the day.
  • In the Canary Islands, light to moderate trade winds will persist.

Wave Warning

AEMET has also issued a wave warning for the province of Girona (Catalonia) due to the influence of strong coastal winds.

Residents across the affected regions, especially in the Canary Islands, are advised to stay informed through official updates and exercise caution in areas prone to heavy rain, low visibility, or strong winds.
