Weekend weather warnings in the Canary Islands: Which islands will be affected?

A new DANA system is set to bring storms and heavy rain to parts of the Canary Islands this weekend, prompting official weather alerts.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued weather warnings for this weekend in parts of the Canary Islands, forecasting rain and storms due to the arrival of a DANA (Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos – an isolated high-altitude depression). This atmospheric disturbance is expected to bring instability, particularly to the westernmost islands, during Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th.

Affected Islands and Risk Zones

La Palma

A yellow warning is in effect for the summits and the eastern and western zones of La Palma, from 15:00 on Saturday until 11:59 on Sunday. AEMET forecasts accumulated rainfall of up to 20 litres per square metre in one hour, with the highest probability of heavy showers occurring inland and on the eastern slopes. These downpours may also be accompanied by isolated thunderstorms.

El Hierro

A similar risk warning applies to El Hierro during the same time period (Saturday 15:00 to Sunday 11:59). Forecasts indicate possible rainfall of up to 15 litres per square metre in one hour, with the inland areas most at risk.

These warnings follow an already unsettled Friday, with cloudy intervals and overcast skies expected during the midday hours. AEMET predicts intense and localised showers in both La Palma and El Hierro on Friday. The arrival of the DANA will intensify these conditions into the weekend, making heavy rain and storms increasingly likely.

From midday onwards, rainfall is expected to begin, with the most intense showers forecast for the western islands, particularly La Palma and El Hierro. Strong storms are also likely in the afternoon and late evening.

Temperature Trends

Temperatures will remain largely stable, though maximum temperatures may rise slightly on northern and eastern slopes, particularly in the mid-altitude zones of the central islands.

  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife: Temperatures ranging between 17°C and 22°C
