Orange and yellow weather warnings in the Canary Islands ahead of incoming storm

A new storm system will bring strong winds, heavy rain, and coastal hazards to the Canary Islands this Thursday.

The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued orange and yellow weather warnings across the Canary Islands due to the arrival of a new storm system expected to bring strong winds, dangerous coastal conditions, and significant rainfall, especially on Thursday, 3 April.

Orange Alerts: High-Impact Wind Events

Orange warnings, which signify severe weather conditions, have been activated for the following areas:

  • La Palma (summits, east and west)
  • La Gomera
  • El Hierro
  • Northern Tenerife

These areas are forecast to experience maximum wind gusts of up to 90 km/h, particularly from 05:00 to 21:59 on Thursday.

Yellow Alerts: Moderate but Hazardous Conditions

Yellow warnings, indicating less severe but still potentially dangerous weather, include:

  • Tenerife: east, south, west, and metropolitan areas (winds up to 70 km/h)
  • Gran Canaria: east, south, and west coasts
  • Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: warnings effective from 15:00 on Thursday

Coastal Phenomena

Yellow warnings for coastal hazards have also been issued for:

  • Northern Gran Canaria
  • Eastern and western La Palma
  • La Gomera
  • Northern Tenerife and its metropolitan area
  • El Hierro

These zones are expected to experience westerly to south-westerly winds ranging between 50 and 61 km/h, particularly along the south-eastern and north-western coasts. These winds will be accompanied by sea waves of up to 5 metres, potentially impacting beach access, harbours, and shoreline infrastructure.

Rainfall Forecast

Heavy rain is also anticipated. AEMET has issued yellow warnings for potential rain accumulation of up to 15 mm in one hour in the:

  • Summits and western areas of La Palma
  • La Gomera
  • El Hierro

These rain events could lead to localised flooding or disruptions in vulnerable or poorly drained areas.

Residents and visitors across the archipelago are advised to monitor official weather bulletins, limit outdoor activities, and avoid coastal areas during the period of peak storm activity, particularly on Thursday.
