Access to Mount Teide’s peak reopens with restrictions: What you need to know

Access to Mount Teide’s summit has reopened, but only for experienced and properly equipped visitors.

The Island Council of Tenerife has officially reopened pedestrian access to the trails leading to the peak of Mount Teide. However, this access is limited to individuals who meet specific requirements, including holders of a mountain federation card and licensed tourism professionals or companies.

Who Can Access the Peak?

  • Federated mountaineers: Individuals holding a valid mountain federation card are allowed access but must carry essential winter mountain equipment, including technical clothing, crampons, and an ice axe.
  • These individuals must also be registered on the Tenerife ON digital platform and submit a permit request via the app or website.
  • Tourist guides and companies: Professionals operating independently or as part of registered tourism businesses must:
    • Be listed in the Canary Islands’ Tourism Registry.
    • Hold the relevant credentials and authorisation to guide in the Teide National Park.
    • Be allowed to lead groups of up to 15 people per guide.
    • Ensure all participants, including guides, carry the required winter gear (technical clothing, crampons, and ice axe).
    • Be registered in the Tenerife ON application.

Important Safety Measures and Equipment Requirements

The Council emphasises that these trails are extremely challenging and not suitable for inexperienced hikers, nor for those with cardiac, respiratory, or mobility issues. Therefore, the following equipment is mandatory:

  • Long trousers (worn or packed)
  • Fleece jacket
  • Sturdy mountain boots
  • Sufficient water or hydrating liquids
  • Mobile phone
  • Torch or headlamp with batteries (especially for late-day or night activities)
  • In winter, it is also compulsory to bring gloves and a hat.

The Council urges all visitors to exercise caution, follow regulations, and avoid underestimating the challenges of Mount Teide’s high-altitude environment.
