Very strong winds and rough seas prompt weather warning across the Canary Islands this Sunday

AEMET warns of strong winds and rough seas across the Canary Islands this Sunday.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a warning for the Canary Islands for Sunday, forecasting very strong winds and hazardous sea conditions across several areas of the archipelago.

General Weather Outlook

According to AEMET’s latest forecast, skies will be mostly cloudy throughout the day. Light, intermittent rain is likely in the north—particularly in mid-altitude areas—mainly during the first half of the day. Later, occasional rain may persist in the northeast.

The rest of the region can expect variable cloud cover, becoming increasingly overcast towards the west and south in the afternoon.

Temperature and Wind Forecast

Overall, temperatures will remain relatively stable, although slight increases are expected in the higher mountain zones. There is a low chance of light frost in the central mountainous areas.

  • Tenerife: highs around 24°C
  • El Hierro: lows of approximately 12°C

Moderate north-easterly winds will prevail, with stronger intervals in the far northwest and eastern slopes. Very strong gusts are considered likely in these areas. Breezes will dominate along the western coast.

Island-specific Conditions and Alerts

La Gomera

A yellow alert has been issued due to expected high winds. Moderate north-easterly winds will bring strong gusts to the southeast and northwest of the island, as well as in southern highlands and mid-altitude areas, where very strong gusts are possible.

Gran Canaria

Cloudy skies are expected across the island, with a higher likelihood of light, scattered rain in the northern midlands and interior during the morning. The rest of the island will remain mostly clear.
Gran Canaria is also under a yellow warning for wind, with strong north-easterly gusts forecasted—especially along the southeast and west coasts, and in the southern and western highlands.

Fuerteventura and Lanzarote

Both islands will experience moderate northeast winds, which are expected to increase in strength by the afternoon.

  • Fuerteventura: Very strong gusts cannot be ruled out.
  • Lanzarote: Stable temperatures are predicted, ranging from 16°C to 23°C.

Maritime Conditions

At sea, AEMET forecasts persistent northeasterly winds (force 4 to 6), with areas of rough or very rough seas. A north to north-westerly swell is expected, generating waves between one and two metres.

Residents and visitors are urged to remain cautious, particularly in coastal zones and mountainous areas, and to stay updated through official sources.
