Wind warning in the Canary Islands: Strong trade winds and cloudy skies this Wednesday

Strong trade winds and cloudy skies will shape Wednesday’s weather in the Canary Islands.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has issued a warning for the Canary Islands for Wednesday, 21 May 2025, due to strong trade winds and possible very strong gusts on several islands. While temperatures will remain largely stable, the combination of intense wind and varying cloud cover is expected to shape the day’s weather across the archipelago.

Winds Strengthen Across the Archipelago

According to AEMET, trade winds will blow with strong intervals, and occasional very strong gusts are likely, particularly on the southeast and northwest slopes of the mountainous islands. Breezes will prevail on the southwest coasts, while in the high-altitude regions, light easterly or westerly winds are expected.

At sea, winds from the northeast will reach force 4 or 5, and locally up to force 6, especially along the southeast and northwest coasts of the mountainous islands and in the east and west of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. The marine forecast also warns of moderate to very heavy swells, particularly in the eastern province and around Tenerife, along with a north swell of 1–2 metres.

AEMET continues to monitor the situation, particularly with gusts strong enough to disrupt outdoor activities and marine navigation.
