The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has placed 30 provinces under various weather warnings for Wednesday, citing the approach of a cold drop (DANA) currently developing into an isolated upper-level low over the north-west of the Iberian Peninsula. The adverse weather is expected to affect much of mainland Spain, particularly with storms and heavy rainfall, while only limited parts of the north-east will experience high temperatures.
Rain and Storm Warnings Across the North and Centre
A large swathe of the north and central regions of Spain is under alert for unstable atmospheric conditions, primarily due to the influence of the evolving DANA system.
Regions under warning include:
- Asturias: Cordillera and Picos de Europa
- Cantabria: Cantabrian coast, Liébana, central zones and the Villaverde valley
- Castile and León: Burgos, León, Palencia, Segovia, Soria, Zamora, Ávila, Salamanca and Valladolid
- Galicia: A Coruña, Lugo, Ourense and Pontevedra
- La Rioja: Iberian area and Ribera del Ebro
- Basque Country: Álava, Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia
- Navarre
- Madrid region: Sierra, metropolitan area, Henares, Sur, Vegas and Oeste
- Extremadura: Cáceres
- Castilla-La Mancha: Guadalajara and Toledo
- Andalusia: Córdoba
- Southwest Asturias
These areas may see intense showers and thunderstorms, with a risk of hail and strong wind gusts, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.
Heat Alerts for the North-East

In contrast, parts of north-eastern Spain will be under alert due to elevated temperatures. The provinces affected include:
- Aragón: Huesca, Teruel and Zaragoza
- Catalonia: Girona and Lleida
In these zones, temperatures could reach or exceed 38°C, particularly in low-lying inland areas and river valleys.
National Weather Outlook: Cloudy Skies, Storms, and Temperature Variations
According to AEMET, the presence of the upper-level low will result in predominantly cloudy skies, with medium to high-level cloud cover. As the day progresses, cloud development is expected, particularly inland, although clearing is likely in parts of the south-west later in the day.
Showers and thunderstorms are forecast to begin in the early hours over the northwest, south and central parts of the country, gradually extending northwards. Locally heavy rainfall is likely in:
- Galicia at dawn
- Andalusia during the morning
- Various central and northern areas throughout the day
These showers may be accompanied by hail and intense wind gusts.
Canary Islands: Calm Amid the Chaos

In stark contrast to mainland Spain, the Canary Islands will continue to enjoy stable weather conditions. The forecast includes:
- Cloudy intervals in northern areas during the early morning and late afternoon
- Clear or mostly clear skies elsewhere, with occasional high clouds
- Temperatures largely unchanged
- Trade winds will remain moderate, with occasional strong gusts on the south-eastern and western slopes of mountainous islands
- Coastal breezes are expected on south-western shores
Temperature Trends
- A rise in maximum temperatures is expected in the easternmost parts of the peninsula, particularly in the eastern Cantabrian region, where values may exceed 34–36°C
- In northeast depressions, temperatures may even surpass 38°C
- In contrast, much of the rest of the peninsula—especially areas facing the Atlantic—will see a noticeable drop in temperatures
Wind Conditions
- Light to moderate winds are forecast across most of the country
- Southerly and easterly winds will dominate in the Balearic Islands, north-east, and eastern coastal zones
- Westerly and southerly winds will prevail elsewhere
- Strong gusts are possible along the Galician coastline and in north-western mountainous areas
