Cloudy skies in the Canaries, heat alerts across mainland Spain this Monday

Cloudy skies are expected in northern parts of the Canary Islands on Monday, with stable temperatures, while much of mainland Spain faces yellow alerts for heat, storms, and coastal conditions.

The Canary Islands are forecast to experience cloudy skies on Monday, particularly in the northern areas of the mountainous islands, where light and scattered rain may occur during the early hours of the morning, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

In contrast, the easternmost islands of the archipelago will see intermittent cloud cover that is expected to clear gradually, resulting in largely sunny conditions by the afternoon. The rest of the islands will enjoy mostly clear skies throughout the day.

Temperatures across the Canary Islands will remain generally stable, although a slight increase in daytime highs is expected in the central islands. Winds will be moderate from the northeast, with occasional strong gusts on the southeastern and northwestern slopes, particularly during the early morning and afternoon hours.

Meanwhile, nine autonomous communities on the Spanish mainland and the Balearic Islands are under yellow weather alerts on Monday due to high temperatures, storms, heavy rainfall, and coastal phenomena.

The regions affected are:
Andalusia, Aragón, Balearic Islands, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, and the Community of Madrid.

  • Thunderstorms and intense showers are expected in Teruel, parts of the southern plateau, and mountainous areas of Andalusia, where rainfall could be locally heavy.
  • Maximum temperatures are forecast to be notably high across much of the southern Atlantic coast and parts of Galicia, with a sharp increase anticipated in inland areas of the central-north and north-western peninsula.
  • In many locations, especially in Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Lleida, Madrid, Ourense, Salamanca, Valladolid, Zamora, and Zaragoza, temperatures are expected to surpass 34–36°C.
  • In parts of the southern half of the Atlantic coast—specifically Toledo, Seville, Córdoba, and Badajoz—the mercury may even exceed 38–40°C, according to AEMET.
  • Night-time temperatures (minimums) will rise in the western third of the peninsula but may drop slightly in inland areas of the northeast. Elsewhere, overnight temperatures are likely to remain largely unchanged.

  • In Ampurdán (Catalonia), expect winds from the north.
  • Easterly winds will also affect the Cantabrian and southeastern coasts.
