Haze returns to the Canary Islands alongside rising temperatures

Haze returns to the Canary Islands this Tuesday, bringing high temperatures and cloudy skies across parts of the archipelago.

The Canary Islands are set to experience a return of calima (Saharan dust haze) this Tuesday, accompanied by cloudy skies across various parts of the archipelago and rising temperatures that may reach up to 30°C in some areas, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

In Tenerife, cloud cover is expected in the north during the early morning and late afternoon, while the rest of the day will remain mostly overcast in those areas. Across the remainder of the island, generally clear skies will prevail, though intermittent cloudiness may appear in the south.

  • Temperatures will remain largely stable, with highs reaching 28°C and lows around 15°C in El Hierro.
  • Winds will be moderate from the northeast, while in mountainous regions, light southerly breezes are expected.

Province of Las Palmas

On Gran Canaria, the northern coast will begin the day with cloudy skies, transitioning to partly cloudy conditions as the day progresses. The rest of the island will enjoy clear or slightly cloudy skies, with medium and high-level cloud formations expected later in the day.

  • Light calima is anticipated at higher altitudes from midday onwards.

In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, cloud cover will dominate the northern, eastern, and western coasts, while clearer conditions are forecast for the interior and southern zones.

Haze returns to the Canary Islands alongside rising temperatures

  • Light and sporadic showers may occur, and haze is expected at higher elevations during the second half of the day.
  • In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures will range from a minimum of 20°C to a high of 24°C.
  • Winds will blow moderately from the northeast, becoming strong at times on the southeastern and northwestern slopes during the central hours of the day. In mountainous areas, expect moderate southerly winds.

Mainland Spain: Widespread Weather Alerts in Effect

While the Canary Islands face haze and localised cloud cover, mainland Spain is under multiple yellow weather warnings due to extreme heat, storms, heavy rain, and adverse coastal conditions.

According to AEMET, yellow alerts have been issued for nine autonomous communities and the Balearic Islands:

  • Andalusia, Aragon, the Balearic Islands, Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Galicia, and the Community of Madrid.

Forecast Highlights

  • Thunderstorms and heavy showers are expected in Teruel, parts of the southern plateau, and mountainous zones in Andalusia.
