Gran Hotel Taoro prepares to reopen after landmark restoration by leading Canary Islands architects

Gran Hotel Taoro will reopen on 15 September after a major restoration led by award-winning Canary Islands architects.

The Gran Hotel Taoro, one of Spain’s historic symbols of luxury tourism, is set to reopen on 15 September following an ambitious and technically demanding restoration. The project returns this emblematic building in Puerto de la Cruz, Tenerife, to its former splendour and places it once again at the forefront of the national hotel scene.

A Heritage Brought Back to Life

The comprehensive renovation has been led by renowned Canary Islands architects Virgilio Gutiérrez and Eustaquio Martínez, celebrated for their dedication to architectural heritage. Both have received multiple distinctions, including the Manuel de Oraá y Arcocha Regional Architecture Prize, and are behind landmark projects such as the renovation of the Hotel Mencey, significant interventions in Tenerife’s public spaces, and the acclaimed terminal at Tenerife North Airport, showcased by New York’s MoMA as a benchmark of contemporary Spanish architecture.

Gustavo Escobar, director of the Gran Hotel Taoro, remarked: “We are proud that the Cabildo has entrusted us with this historical gem.”

Construction and Interior Design

The construction works were executed by Dragados, a leading firm in the sector, which overcame the complex technical challenges of restoring a historic structure of this magnitude. The interiors were reimagined by the design studio Dishot Insular, specialists in luxury hospitality projects, who have created an elegant and functional reinterpretation of the original spaces, carefully balancing modern comfort with respect for the building’s heritage.

Institutional and Management Commitment

The project has been promoted by the Cabildo de Tenerife, demonstrating the island authority’s commitment to preserving and revitalising cultural heritage. Management of the hotel will be undertaken by Tropical Turística Canaria, through its MyWay Hotels & Resorts brand.

Looking Ahead

Once reopened, the Gran Hotel Taoro will offer luxury accommodation deeply connected with the history, identity, and natural environment of northern Tenerife. Beyond its role as a five-star destination, it is expected to become a cultural and social meeting point for both residents and travellers, reaffirming its historic status as one of Spain’s great hotels.
