The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has updated its forecast for Monday, 15 September, placing several areas of the Canary Islands under yellow alert due to high winds and soaring temperatures. Gusts of up to 70 km/h and maximum temperatures reaching 34°C are expected across the archipelago.
Worst Day of the Heatwave
According to AEMET, Monday will mark the peak of the current heatwave affecting the islands. The Government of the Canary Islands has declared an official alert, along with three pre-alerts, as a hot and dry air mass intensifies conditions across the region.
Areas Under Wind Alerts

The following areas are under warning for strong gusts:
- La Palma: High areas of the island, particularly the municipality of El Paso.
- La Gomera: High-altitude zones and the southeast and west slopes.
- El Hierro: Peaks and exposed slopes.
- Tenerife: East, south, and west slopes, especially in mid-altitude and high areas.
Areas Under Heat Alerts
From 11:00 a.m. to 7:59 p.m. on Monday, maximum temperatures of up to 34°C are expected in Gran Canaria, leading to yellow alerts in:
- Cumbres de Gran Canaria, with particular focus on the Tejeda basin.
- Eastern, southern, and western slopes, including the midlands oriented south and west.
AEMET notes that yellow warnings do not indicate extreme weather but highlight conditions that may pose risks to health, daily activities, or specific localities.
General Weather Conditions

- Sky conditions: Mostly clear skies with intervals of high clouds in the morning. Light calima (dust haze) at higher altitudes is expected in the afternoon.
- North-facing areas: Cloudy intervals early in the day, clearing later. The northeast will remain cloudy below 600–800 metres.
- Temperatures: Mostly unchanged, though slight increases are likely in the mid-altitude zones of the southern slopes. Local highs could reach 32°C on western, southern, and southeastern slopes, and up to 34°C inland areas such as the Tejeda basin.
- Winds: Moderate northeast trade winds, with strong intervals on the southeast, far northwest, and southern slopes of Tenerife’s metropolitan area. Very strong gusts are possible, especially on southeast-facing slopes. In mountainous zones, winds will shift to moderate from the east. On the western coasts, breezes will dominate.
Sea Conditions
Maritime forecasts indicate northeast winds of force 5 to 6, occasionally reaching 7 in the northwest and southeast during the early morning, creating swells and heavy seas. On the southwest coast, winds will be lighter (force 1–3) with choppy seas. A northern swell will generate waves of 1–2 metres.
