Possible severe storms in Tenerife as heatwave and calima intensify in the Canary Islands

Weather agency warns of intense heat, calima, and possible severe storms in Tenerife this Thursday.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has updated its forecast for the Canary Islands this Thursday, warning that the ongoing heatwave may bring not only extreme heat and calima but also the possibility of isolated storms, which in some areas of Tenerife could be locally severe.

Warnings maintained for heat and calima

The AEMET continues to maintain yellow-level weather warnings across much of the archipelago. The agency highlights that the calima will especially affect mid-altitude and high-altitude areas with southern orientation, reducing visibility and worsening air quality.

At the same time, the heatwave—already one of the most intense of the season—will keep temperatures at exceptionally high values. Forecasts suggest:

  • 34ºC in the midlands and peaks of the mountainous islands.
  • 34ºC in inland areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
  • 36ºC in Gran Canaria, with peaks of 37ºC possible in the Tejeda basin and other southern and western midlands.

Yesterday, maximums already reached 37ºC, and similar figures are feared again today.

Possibility of storms

According to the AEMET, the extreme instability may trigger storms with occasional showers in inland areas during the middle of the day. On Tenerife, these storms could be locally intense, adding another risk factor to the already severe conditions of heat and dust.

Areas most affected

  • Gran Canaria: Midlands, southern and western slopes, and especially the Tejeda basin.
  • Tenerife: Inland zones where storms could strike, alongside heat on the southern and western slopes.
  • Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: Inland areas expected to reach or exceed 34ºC.
  • Mountainous islands (La Palma, La Gomera, El Hierro): Maximums of around 34ºC in midlands and peaks, aggravated by calima.

This episode is part of a prolonged heatwave in the Canary Islands, with AEMET reiterating that today is likely to be the most intense day of the event. Authorities advise the population to avoid exposure during central hours of the day, stay hydrated, and take precautions in outdoor activities, particularly in natural areas where the risk of forest fires remains high.
