Canary Islands hit record number of foreign tourists in August

The islands surpassed 1.2 million international visitors in a single month for the first time, and over 10 million in the year-to-date — both unprecedented milestones.

The Canary Islands registered an unprecedented 1,235,965 foreign tourists in August 2025, according to figures released on Thursday by the National Statistics Institute (INE).


  • This represents the highest figure ever recorded for August in the islands’ historical series.
  • It marks a 6% increase compared with the same month in 2024.

Cumulative Growth January–August

From January to August 2025, the archipelago also set a historic record, welcoming a total of 10,307,160 international visitors.

  • This represents a 4.5% increase compared with the same period in 2024.
  • It is also the first time ever that the Canary Islands surpassed the 10 million visitor mark by the eighth month of the year, according to the Frontur Border Tourist Movement Statistics.

Comparison with Other Regions

In the first eight months of the year, the Canary Islands ranked third among Spanish regions in terms of foreign tourist arrivals:

  1. Catalonia – 13.8 million visitors (+0.2%)
  2. Balearic Islands – 11.5 million visitors (+3.3%)
  3. Canary Islands – 10.3 million visitors (+4.5%)

Main Source Markets

The UK and Germany continue to dominate as the islands’ key tourism markets:

  • United Kingdom – 552,898 visitors in August alone
  • Germany – 166,335 arrivals during the same month

Together, these two countries account for a significant share of the islands’ overall tourism base.

Tourism Spending at Record Levels

Foreign tourists also spent more than ever before in the Canary Islands in August 2025:

  • Total expenditure: €2.23 billion (+14.1% compared with August 2024)
  • Average spend per tourist: €1,804 (+7.6%)
  • Average daily spend: €208 (+4.2%)
  • Average length of stay: 8.7 nights (+3.3%)

The figures come from the Tourist Expenditure Survey (Egatur), published alongside INE’s monthly data.

The data confirms that the Canary Islands remain one of Spain’s leading tourist destinations, not only breaking records in arrival numbers but also in spending and length of stay.
