IGN detects three earthquakes in Gran Canaria — all within the same municipality

IGN detected three small earthquakes in Agaete, Gran Canaria overnight, the strongest reaching magnitude 2.9 and being felt by residents.

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has confirmed that three earthquakes were recorded in the early hours of the morning on Gran Canaria, all within the municipality of Agaete. The strongest of them reached a magnitude of 2.9 and was felt by residents in the area.


According to the official data, the most significant tremor occurred at 01:19 a.m., with its epicentre located to the south of Agaete at a depth of approximately 7 kilometres. The seismic activity was registered at 28.08º north latitude and 15.7º west longitude.

Just 40 minutes later, at 01:59 a.m., a second earthquake was detected in virtually the same location. This tremor registered a magnitude of 2.3, also at a depth of 7 kilometres.

The third and final event was recorded slightly further north than the previous two. It was the weakest, measuring 1.7 magnitude, and occurred at a depth of 5 kilometres.

Although the earthquakes were relatively low in magnitude, the IGN notes that the first tremor was strong enough to be perceptible to the local population.
