Aemet brings good news to the Canary Islands: temperatures are finally dropping

Aemet forecasts cooler temperatures and increased cloud cover in the Canary Islands, with possible light rain in northern areas.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts a change in weather conditions across the Canary Islands this Thursday, bringing lower temperatures and more cloud cover after several days of intense heat.


Cloudier skies and possible light rain

According to Aemet, the day will begin with predominantly cloudy skies in the north of the islands, where light rain is possible, especially in the north-eastern areas and at mid-altitudes.

  • In the east, there will be intervals of cloud.
  • In the rest of the archipelago, skies will start out mostly clear or slightly cloudy.

From late morning, cloud cover will increase in the west and south, where isolated showers cannot be ruled out.

Temperatures begin to fall

Aemet forecasts a slight to moderate decrease in temperatures across the islands. The drop will be most noticeable in inland areas, especially at mid-altitude and high elevations.

Expected values:

  • Maximum of around 25 °C in Tenerife
  • Minimum of around 18 °C in El Hierro

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures will range from 21 °C (minimum) to 25 °C (maximum).

Winds

Winds will blow moderately from the north-east, occasionally stronger in exposed areas such as the south-east, extreme west, and north-west of the islands. Breeze conditions are expected along the south-western coasts.

In the high central peaks, winds will be moderate from the west, gradually shifting to a north-westerly direction throughout the day.

Forecast by island group

  • Gran Canaria (north): mostly cloudy skies with probable light rain, especially at mid-altitudes during the first half of the day.
  • Interior, east and south of Gran Canaria: cloudy intervals increasing to cloudy skies in the afternoon, with possible isolated showers.
  • Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: cloudy intervals, becoming predominantly cloudy inland and in the east at midday.
