Aemet warns of heavy rain across the Canary Islands in the coming days

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued a warning for the Canary Islands, predicting a significant change in weather conditions accompanied by heavy rain, especially towards the western islands.

According to Aemet’s forecast, Monday will begin with cloudy skies in the north and west of the islands, where there is a low probability of light and occasional showers. The northeast is expected to clear as the day progresses.

In the rest of the archipelago, skies will alternate between sunny spells and patches of cloud, becoming more overcast in the afternoon. The high peaks will remain mostly clear.

Emergency services (112 Canarias) have issued a serious warning after a difficult weekend along the Tenerife coastline, alerting that waves could reach up to four metres under the forecasted sea conditions.

Temperatures will show little variation. In Tenerife, highs of around 24°C are expected, while the lowest temperatures will be recorded on El Hierro at around 16°C.

Moderate north-easterly winds are forecast, with stronger gusts on the south-eastern slopes and the far west of the islands. Winds are expected to ease later in the afternoon.

Weather models from Meteored also indicate that intense and persistent rain will reach the archipelago over the next few days, particularly affecting the western islands (Tenerife, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro), where rainfall could be locally heavy.

On Gran Canaria, cloudy skies will dominate the northern side of the island, with a chance of light rain during the morning that should decrease later in the day. Elsewhere on the island, skies will turn increasingly cloudy during the afternoon, especially towards the south.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will experience cloudy intervals, giving way to lighter cloud cover as the day progresses.

Across the archipelago, temperatures are expected to remain stable. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, values will range between 20°C and 24°C. Winds will continue to blow from the northeast, generally moderate, again with strong gusts in exposed south-eastern and far-western areas.
