Snow on Mount Teide and La Palma: Aemet forecasts a sharp drop in temperatures across the Canary Islands

Winter makes its first appearance on the Canary peaks as cold air sweeps the islands.

Snow has returned to the peaks of Tenerife and La Palma, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), which forecasts a marked drop in temperatures and an increase in cloud cover across the Canary Islands this Thursday. Light rain is expected in many areas, while the highest elevations may see snowfall for the first time this season.

The maximum temperature will reach around 24°C in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 23°C in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, while minimum temperatures will hover near 19°C in both capitals. Winds will blow from the north-east or east, starting off light in the morning and becoming moderate from midday onwards.

At sea, northeasterly winds are expected to reach force 2 to 4, depending on the area, with moderate to rough seas and a north to north-westerly swell of 1 to 2 metres.

Island-by-Island Forecast

Snow on Mount Teide and La Palma: Aemet forecasts a sharp drop in temperatures across the Canary Islands

Lanzarote – Variable cloud cover with a low probability of light and scattered rain, accompanied by abundant high clouds. Temperatures will show little change. Northeast winds, light at first, will increase to moderate later in the day.

Fuerteventura – Similar conditions to Lanzarote, with intermittent cloudiness and isolated light rain possible. Temperatures will remain stable. Light northeasterly winds will strengthen slightly from midday.

Gran Canaria – Predominantly high clouds with intervals of low and medium clouds forming after dawn, becoming more compact over northern and inland areas around midday. Light rain is likely in these regions. Maximum temperatures will remain steady, while minimums dip slightly. Light northeasterly winds will increase to moderate in the afternoon, with sea breezes along the west coast.

Tenerife – Skies will be dominated by high cloud layers, with low and medium clouds developing after midday, especially over the north, southwest, and east by late afternoon. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in these areas, with snow above 2,300 to 2,400 metres, affecting Mount Teide’s summit.

Temperatures will remain largely unchanged, apart from a slight drop in the highs in northern and elevated zones. Winds will be light from the northeast, becoming moderate later, and easterly on the high peaks. Sea breezes will continue along the western coast.

Snow on Mount Teide and La Palma: Aemet forecasts a sharp drop in temperatures across the Canary Islands

La Gomera – High clouds will dominate, with low and medium layers increasing after midday, particularly in the north and southwestern interior, where isolated light rain is possible. Temperatures will remain stable or dip slightly at higher elevations. Winds from the northeast will increase from light to moderate by evening, with breezes on the west coast.

La Palma – Skies will be mostly cloudy, thickening after midday in the north, east, and northwest, where light rain is expected, turning to snow above 2,400 to 2,600 metres. Maximum temperatures will remain steady, while minimums decrease slightly. Winds will be light from the east, shifting northeasterly and moderate by late afternoon. Easterly winds will prevail at high altitude, with breezes along the western coastline.

El Hierro – Generally high clouds, with intervals of low and medium cloudiness that will be denser along the northern and southern slopes, where occasional light rain is possible. Minimum temperatures will remain stable, while maximums drop slightly. Winds will be light from the east, becoming moderate from the northeast later in the day, with breezes on the western side of the island.

Aemet expects this unsettled, colder pattern to persist into the weekend, bringing further showers, strong winds in exposed areas, and possible snowfall at higher elevations on the westernmost islands.
