A weather “combo” of calima, rain and wind to affect the Canary Islands, says AEMET

Conditions will shift throughout the day, with sunshine giving way to increasing cloud in the north and east, a slight chance of overnight showers, and light calima possible at higher elevations.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), the Canary Islands are set to experience a varied weather pattern combining calima, intermittent rainfall and moderate winds. In response, the Canary Islands Government has activated two early warning notices that apply to the entire archipelago.

General outlook for the archipelago

For much of the day, skies are expected to remain largely clear, although occasional cloud cover may develop in western areas. As the afternoon progresses, cloudiness will increase across northern and eastern parts of the islands. In these areas, there is a chance of light rainfall during the night, though any precipitation is expected to be generally weak and localised.

Temperatures will show little variation compared with previous days. Maximum values are forecast to reach around 21°C in Tenerife, while minimum temperatures may drop to approximately 11°C on El Hierro. At higher elevations, particularly in mountainous areas, light frosts cannot be ruled out.

Winds will blow at moderate strength from the east during the morning, gradually veering towards the northeast from midday onwards, which may contribute to a noticeable drop in perceived temperatures in exposed areas.

Province of Las Palmas

For Friday, 9 January 2026, AEMET forecasts predominantly clear skies across the province of Las Palmas. However, cloud cover is expected to increase later in the day in northern and eastern zones of Gran Canaria. A light haze may be present during the first half of the day, easing as the afternoon advances.

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures are predicted to range between 15°C and 21°C, with generally stable conditions and no significant thermal fluctuations.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

On Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the forecast points to intervals of cloudiness, with a low probability of light, scattered showers. These are more likely to occur in northern areas and around the middle of the day. From the afternoon onwards, skies should become mostly clear again, although a light haze may persist, particularly at higher altitudes.

Overall, while no severe conditions are expected, AEMET advises residents and visitors to remain attentive to local updates, especially in areas prone to sudden changes in cloud cover, wind or reduced visibility due to haze.
