Friday brings cloudy skies, afternoon rain and stronger winds to the archipelago

Conditions are expected to improve briefly around midday before cloud cover, scattered rain and stronger winds return later in the afternoon.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts variable and unsettled weather across the Canary Islands this Friday, with cloud cover, periods of clearing, and the possibility of rain in several areas, particularly during the afternoon and evening.

Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife

According to Aemet, cloudy skies will dominate the northern parts of the islands in this province during the morning hours. These clouds are expected to break up around midday, leading to clearer intervals, especially at lower elevations.

In the rest of the province, skies will show alternating cloudy intervals, with the brightest conditions likely around midday. However, from the afternoon onwards, cloud cover is forecast to increase once again, with a chance of light to locally moderate rainfall, particularly affecting the midlands and becoming more likely towards the late afternoon.

Temperatures are expected to remain largely stable, although a slight drop in maximum temperatures is forecast in higher mountain areas.

  • Maximums: up to 22°C in Tenerife
  • Minimums: down to 12°C in El Hierro

In the highest elevations, light frost cannot be ruled out, especially during the early morning and late evening.

Wind

Winds will blow light to moderate from the north throughout most of the day. During the late afternoon, however, wind speeds are expected to increase, with the possibility of locally very strong gusts in mountainous areas. Along the southern coasts, sea breezes will remain the dominant feature.

Gran Canaria

In the north of Gran Canaria, skies will remain mostly cloudy during the morning, with some sunny intervals around midday. As the afternoon progresses, cloud cover will increase again, bringing a chance of light to moderate rainfall, particularly in the midlands during the late afternoon.

In the rest of the island, skies will alternate between cloudy intervals and clear periods, with the most settled conditions expected around midday.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura

Both islands will see predominantly cloudy skies at the start of the day, followed by clearer spells around midday. During the afternoon, there is a possibility of light, occasional rain, although precipitation is expected to be scattered and generally weak.

Temperatures

Temperatures across the province of Las Palmas will remain largely unchanged, with slight increases in maximum temperatures, particularly on eastern-facing slopes and coastal areas. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, values are expected to range between 17°C (minimum) and 21°C (maximum).

Winds will blow moderately from the north, with strong intervals expected in eastern and north-western areas. As the day draws to a close, winds may intensify in mountainous zones, where locally very strong gusts cannot be ruled out. As elsewhere in the archipelago, breezes will prevail along southern coasts.

Outlook

Overall, Friday will bring changing weather conditions across the Canary Islands, combining cloud cover, occasional rainfall and strengthening winds later in the day. Residents and visitors are advised to stay informed of updates from Aemet, particularly in higher and more exposed areas where conditions may deteriorate rapidly.
