Hurricane-force winds batter Tenerife as heavy rain affects all the Canary Islands

Extreme gusts at high altitude and intense rainfall have placed several locations in the archipelago among the most affected in Spain during the storm.

The storm sweeping across the Canary Islands has brought exceptionally strong winds and widespread heavy rainfall, with Tenerife among the most severely affected areas. The most extreme conditions were recorded in Teide National Park, where wind gusts reached 131 kilometres per hour, a level considered hurricane force.

Extreme wind gusts at high altitude

According to data from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the strongest gust was registered at the Izaña weather station, located at high altitude on Mount Teide. The same station also reported one of the highest rainfall totals in Spain during the storm.

By 12:10 pm on Sunday, 34.8 litres per square metre had accumulated at Izaña, making it the second-highest rainfall figure nationwide, exceeded only by Menorca Airport, where 40 litres per square metre were recorded.

Widespread rainfall across the islands

Heavy rainfall was not limited to the highlands. Other significant accumulations reported by Aemet include:

  • Vega de San Mateo: 32.4 l/m²
  • Llano de los Loros (La Laguna): 29.4 l/m²
  • Puntagorda: 26.4 l/m²
  • Tejeda: 24.1 l/m²
  • Tenerife North Airport: 23.5 l/m²
  • Roque de los Muchachos: 22.6 l/m²

These figures place several locations in the Canary Islands among the ten highest rainfall totals in the country during the storm.

Strong winds across multiple locations

Aemet’s national wind statistics also highlight the intensity of gusts recorded across the archipelago. Among the most notable measurements were:

  • Alto de Igualero–Vallehermoso: 98 km/h
  • Tenerife North Airport: 95 km/h
  • Las Cañadas del Teide: 93 km/h
  • Arure: 85 km/h
  • Pájara and La Palma Airport: 84 km/h
  • Haría: 82 km/h
  • Llano de los Loros–La Laguna: 79 km/h
  • El Pinar–La Dehesa: 77 km/h

The combination of strong winds and persistent rain has led to numerous incidents across the islands, including power outages, flight disruptions and the closure of public spaces in several municipalities.

Mild temperatures despite the storm

Despite the severe weather, the Canary Islands also recorded the highest maximum temperatures in Spain on Sunday. The national maximum was registered at Tenerife South Airport, where temperatures reached 22.8°C.

Other high readings included:

  • Maspalomas: 22.6°C
  • La Palma Airport: 21.8°C
  • Fuencaliente, Maspalomas–Centro Insular de Turismo and Güímar: 21.4°C
  • Mogán–Puerto: 21.3°C
  • El Matorral–San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Tuineje–Gran Tarajal: 20.2°C
  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 20°C

These values stand in stark contrast to mainland Spain, where the lowest temperature of the day was recorded at Pradollano in Sierra Nevada National Park, with –13.8°C.

Ongoing monitoring

Meteorological authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, warning that adverse conditions may persist in exposed and mountainous areas. Residents and visitors of the islands are advised to follow official guidance, particularly in zones affected by strong winds, heavy rainfall and potential infrastructure disruption.
