AEMET warns of further frosts on Mount Teide as unsettled weather continues in the Canary Islands

Strong winds and unsettled conditions at altitude will continue to shape the weather, despite some improvement expected later in the day.

The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has updated its weather forecast for the Canary Islands for the coming days, from Thursday, 22 January 2026 onwards, confirming a continuation of unstable conditions, with rain, strong winds and renewed frost risk at higher elevations, particularly on Mount Teide. The agency has also extended the yellow warning for coastal phenomena in Lanzarote, which is expected to remain in force at least until Friday.

Rain and wind expected across the archipelago

According to AEMET, light rainfall is forecast for Thursday, which could become locally moderate and occasional, especially towards the end of the day. These showers are expected to affect both the higher islands and the eastern islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

Looking ahead to Friday afternoon, the forecast again points to light and intermittent rain across parts of the archipelago. In addition to precipitation, wind will become a key factor, with strong gusts likely in mountainous areas and the possibility of very strong gusts in exposed low-lying areas of the higher islands.

Cloudy north, clearer conditions later in the day

During the early hours, the northern slopes of the higher islands are expected to see cloudy skies, with a chance of light rain, particularly in mid-altitude zones. This rainfall is forecast to ease during the early hours of Saturday, after which conditions should gradually improve.

From midday onwards, cloud cover is expected to decrease significantly, leading to mostly clear skies across much of the archipelago. Elsewhere, conditions will remain largely settled, although Lanzarote and Fuerteventura may still experience some cloudy intervals.

Temperatures and frost risk on Teide

Temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged along the coast, while a slight to moderate drop is forecast in inland and higher-altitude areas. AEMET warns that light frosts cannot be ruled out on the central peaks of Tenerife, particularly in the Teide area, where winter conditions remain pronounced.

Wind conditions: strong at altitude, breezes on southern coasts

Winds will generally blow moderately from the north, turning north-easterly during the morning. Strong intervals are expected on the north-western and south-eastern slopes of the higher islands, while breezes will dominate the south-western coastal areas.

In the Teide National Park area, winds will be moderate to strong from the north, with occasional very strong gusts, although these are expected to ease from midday onwards.

Ongoing vigilance advised

AEMET continues to monitor the situation closely and advises residents and visitors, particularly those planning activities in coastal or mountainous areas, to remain alert to official updates, as changing wind, sea and temperature conditions may continue to pose risks over the coming days.
