The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has updated its forecast for the Canary Islands, warning of a marked deterioration in weather conditions from Monday, with widespread cloud cover, periods of rain and strong to very strong winds, particularly in high-altitude and exposed areas.
According to AEMET, the archipelago will be affected by a north-westerly atmospheric flow, a setup that favours rainfall on the northern slopes of the higher islands, along with a noticeable drop in temperatures in inland and mountainous zones.
General outlook: unstable skies and strengthening winds
Monday is expected to be a day of meteorological instability across the islands. Skies will become mostly cloudy, with light to locally moderate rainfall, while wind intensity will increase progressively throughout the day. In elevated areas, very strong gusts are possible, making conditions potentially hazardous in the mountains and on exposed ridges.
Rainfall is most likely to affect northern-facing slopes, especially on islands with higher relief, as moist air is pushed inland by the north-westerly flow.
Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: strong winds in high areas

On Tenerife, cloudy intervals will dominate, particularly in the north, where light to moderate rain is forecast. Special attention is drawn to the summit areas, including Teide, where winds will shift from westerly to north-westerly and could produce gusts of up to 90 km/h.
In the metropolitan area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures are expected to remain mild, ranging between 17°C and 23°C, despite the unsettled conditions.
In La Palma, cloud cover will persist in the north and north-west during the first half of the day, with a chance of moderate rain. Temperatures are expected to fall in the midlands and highlands, while winds will strengthen during the afternoon, with very strong gusts possible in the Caldera de Taburiente.
La Gomera and El Hierro will experience a similar pattern. On La Gomera, rainfall will mainly affect northern and interior areas. On El Hierro, wind intensity will increase notably in mountainous zones and the north-eastern tip of the island, especially during the second half of the day.
Province of Las Palmas: rain in the north and strong gusts on slopes

In Gran Canaria, cloud cover will increase from midday onwards, affecting the northern and inland areas, where rain could be locally moderate. Maximum temperatures are expected to drop in the midlands, while very strong wind gusts are forecast on the eastern and western slopes, as well as in high-altitude areas.
On the eastern islands, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, skies will turn overcast during the middle of the day, with a high likelihood of light, occasional rain, particularly inland. The north-westerly wind will blow with strong intervals and is expected to intensify towards the end of the day.
Sea conditions: increased coastal risk

Marine conditions will also deteriorate. Winds will initially blow from the east or north-east at force 2 to 4, before turning west or north-west during the night, strengthening to force 3 to 5, and locally reaching force 6 in the south-western sectors.
The sea state will be characterised by swell and north-westerly swell, with waves of up to 3 metres, prompting authorities to advise caution along the coast, particularly in exposed areas and during periods of stronger wind and tide.
Residents and visitors are advised to stay informed through official updates and to exercise caution in mountainous areas, on the coast, and during outdoor activities.
