Calm before the storm: stronger winds and possible rain forecast for the Canary Islands from Friday

Authorities advise extra caution in exposed and mountainous areas on Friday afternoon, when wind gusts are expected to reach their strongest levels.

The Canary Islands will experience largely stable and settled weather on Thursday, 12 February 2026, before conditions begin to change on Friday, when stronger winds and locally unsettled weather are expected, according to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET).

While no significant meteorological phenomena are forecast for Thursday, AEMET warns that north winds will intensify on Friday, bringing the possibility of very strong gusts in exposed areas and a slight deterioration in conditions on several islands.

As a result, the provinces of Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Gran Canaria have been placed under a yellow warning for wind-related phenomena.

Thursday, 12 February: stable conditions and mostly clear skies

For Thursday, AEMET predicts a day marked by calm weather and widespread stability across the archipelago. In the north and east of the mountainous islands, at altitudes below 600 to 800 metres, as well as in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, there will be periods of cloudiness, particularly in the morning. However, skies are expected to clear progressively around midday.

Elsewhere, conditions will remain mostly sunny or lightly clouded, creating favourable conditions for outdoor activities.

Temperatures and wind on Thursday

Calm before the storm: stronger winds and possible rain forecast for the Canary Islands from Friday

Temperatures will remain largely unchanged, staying within typical seasonal values:

  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: between 17 °C and 22 °C
  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife: between 18 °C and 24 °C

Winds will blow mainly from the north-east, at light to moderate strength, gradually veering to the north-west towards the end of the day. No weather warnings are in force for Thursday.

Friday, 13 February: increasing winds and more unsettled weather

Conditions are expected to become slightly more unstable on Friday, with wind playing a central role in the change.

AEMET forecasts strong northerly winds, particularly in high-altitude areas and on the eastern and north-western slopes of the higher islands. The strongest gusts are expected during the second half of the day, when winds may reach very strong levels in exposed locations.

These conditions justify the activation of yellow warnings in parts of the archipelago.

Cloud cover and possible rainfall on Friday

Calm before the storm: stronger winds and possible rain forecast for the Canary Islands from Friday

On Friday, cloudy intervals tending towards overcast skies are expected in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and in the north of the mountainous islands, especially around midday.

There is also a low probability of light and occasional rainfall in these areas, although significant precipitation is not anticipated.

Temperatures and wind on Friday

Temperatures are forecast to experience a slight drop along coastal areas, while remaining moderate inland. Expected values in the capitals are:

  • Las Palmas de Gran Canaria: 17 °C / 22 °C
  • Santa Cruz de Tenerife: 17 °C / 23 °C

The moderate northerly wind will strengthen during the afternoon, with the risk of locally very strong gusts on mountain peaks and exposed slopes.

In summary, the Canary Islands will enjoy calm and settled weather on Thursday, with clear skies and stable temperatures. However, from Friday onwards, stronger winds, increased cloud cover and isolated light rain will mark a shift towards more unsettled conditions.

Authorities advise residents and visitors to exercise caution in exposed and mountainous areas, particularly during the second half of Friday, when wind gusts are expected to be strongest.
