Radical shift in Canary Islands weather: two warnings active for adverse conditions

Conditions are expected to worsen as the day progresses, with stronger winds and increasing cloud bringing a more unsettled start to the week.

Weather conditions across the Canary Islands are set to deteriorate progressively on Monday, 2 March, as instability spreads through the archipelago. Spain’s State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, has maintained two yellow warnings covering strong winds and coastal phenomena, signalling a day that will become increasingly unsettled as it unfolds.

Gradual increase in cloud and rainfall

The day is expected to begin with intervals of cloud across much of the archipelago. However, skies will steadily turn more overcast during the afternoon.

It is during the second half of the day that light to moderate rainfall may develop, particularly on the northern slopes of the higher islands. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura could also see rain later in the afternoon or evening as cloud cover thickens.

Temperatures: little change overall

Minimum temperatures are forecast to remain stable or fall slightly in some areas. Daytime highs, meanwhile, may rise slightly to moderately in northern and inland parts of the mountainous islands, while remaining largely unchanged elsewhere.

In the provincial capitals, temperatures will range between lows of around 15°C in both Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and highs of approximately 20°C and 21°C respectively.

Wind takes centre stage

Wind will be one of the most significant features of the day. It will blow from the north-west at moderate strength in the morning but is expected to intensify during the afternoon.

Strong intervals are forecast in exposed areas, especially in:

  • The easternmost islands
  • Summit areas of the higher islands
  • East- and west-facing slopes

In these locations, very strong gusts cannot be ruled out towards the end of the day. Such conditions may complicate driving on mountain roads and affect open or elevated areas.

Rougher seas in the western province

Along the coasts of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, sea conditions are expected to worsen, with increased wave activity contributing to the yellow warning for coastal phenomena.

A day of growing instability

Overall, Monday will evolve from relatively calm conditions in the morning to a more unstable pattern by late afternoon and evening. Increasing cloud cover, the possibility of rainfall and strengthening winds will define the start of the week across the Canary Islands, with authorities advising residents to remain attentive to official updates.
