Aemet warns of a change in the weather: the Canary Islands prepare for the arrival of a new storm system

Several islands could experience gusty winds and a drop in temperatures during the day.

The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned of a shift in weather conditions across the Canary Islands this Sunday, as the archipelago begins to feel the influence of a new storm system approaching the region. While the change will not bring widespread heavy rain, it will lead to more cloud cover in several areas, the possibility of light showers in the north and a slight drop in temperatures.

According to the forecast, the northern slopes of the islands will experience mostly cloudy skies, with a chance of light and occasional rainfall, particularly during the early hours of the day. As the day progresses, cloud cover may gradually break, allowing some sunny intervals around midday, although skies are expected to remain more overcast in the far north-eastern areas.

In contrast, much of the southern and coastal parts of the archipelago are expected to remain largely clear throughout the day, with longer periods of sunshine and more stable conditions.

Slight fall in temperatures across the islands

The arrival of the new weather system will also bring a modest drop in temperatures, especially in inland areas and higher elevations. In the mountainous zones of Tenerife, forecasters do not rule out the possibility of light frost during the early morning hours.

Maximum temperatures are expected to reach around 21°C in Tenerife, while minimum temperatures could fall to 12°C on El Hierro, reflecting the cooler conditions linked to the change in weather patterns.

Wind strengthening in exposed areas

Wind conditions will also play a significant role in Sunday’s weather. Moderate north-easterly winds are expected across much of the archipelago, with strong gusts affecting the south-eastern and far western slopes of the islands.

These winds may become particularly intense during the early hours of the morning, when occasional very strong gusts cannot be ruled out.

At higher elevations, the wind is expected to begin the day blowing moderately from the north-east, before gradually weakening and becoming light and variable later in the day.

Gran Canaria may also see light showers

In northern areas of Gran Canaria, Aemet warns that light rain remains possible, although these showers are expected to be brief and may give way to clearer skies around midday. Elsewhere across the archipelago, conditions should remain mostly stable, with predominantly clear skies throughout the day.

Temperatures in the eastern islands

In the easternmost islands, including Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, temperatures are also expected to drop slightly, particularly in inland and south-western areas. Daytime highs may reach around 20°C in Fuerteventura, while minimum temperatures in Lanzarote could fall to about 14°C.

The wind in these islands will also blow moderately from the north-east, with stronger gusts expected on south-eastern and north-western slopes, especially during the early hours of the day. On the highest terrain, however, winds are forecast to remain light and variable.

Overall, the forecast points to a noticeable but moderate shift in weather conditions, with cooler temperatures, more cloud cover in northern areas and gusty winds marking the start of the new week across the Canary Islands.
