AEMET warns of heavy and persistent rain in the Canary Islands as Tenerife, La Palma and Gran Canaria remain under orange alert

Heavy rain and unstable conditions continue to cause disruptions across several islands.

The Canary Islands continue to face severe weather conditions as Storm Therese maintains its influence across the archipelago. The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has warned of locally heavy and persistent rainfall, particularly affecting Tenerife, La Palma and Gran Canaria, where an orange alert remains in force.

Flooding, landslides and road closures in Gran Canaria

The impact of the storm has already been felt during the early hours of Tuesday, especially in Gran Canaria, where intense rainfall has caused flooding, landslides and significant disruption to road traffic.

Several areas have been affected by water accumulation, forcing the closure of key routes and leaving some communities partially isolated. Among the most serious incidents is the closure of access to the hamlets of Arteara and Fataga, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, following the overflowing of the Fataga ravine and multiple landslides.

The situation has also affected major roads across the island. Authorities have confirmed the closure of the Tarajalillo junction on the GC-1 (kilometre 37), near Bahía Feliz, while access from the GC-1 to Bravo Murillo has been cut off due to a fallen palm tree.

On the GC-2 near Tinoca, traffic has been disrupted by loose rocks and large pools of water, leading to significant congestion. In addition, a section of the GC-60 between San Fernando and Tejeda has been closed as a preventive measure to relieve pressure on the Fataga dam.

Another critical point is the roundabout beneath the GC-1 (GC-100), at junction 23 towards Arinaga, which has also been closed due to flooding.

Persistent rain and active warnings across the islands

Weather conditions remain unstable across several islands. AEMET has activated rain warnings throughout the archipelago, with the highest level of concern focused on the central and western islands.

  • Orange alert: Tenerife, La Palma and Gran Canaria, where heavy and persistent downpours are expected.
  • Yellow alert: El Hierro and La Gomera, for rainfall, along with warnings for storms across the western islands.
  • Wind warning (yellow): remains in place for La Palma, where strong gusts are forecast, particularly later in the day.

Unsettled weather to continue throughout the day

The forecast for Tuesday points to generally cloudy skies, with the possibility of thunderstorms developing in mid-altitude areas and on mountain peaks. While some gradual improvement is expected in the eastern islands during the afternoon, the overall situation remains unstable, particularly in areas already affected by heavy rainfall.

Authorities call for caution

The overnight intensification of rainfall, especially in the southern parts of Gran Canaria, has created hazardous conditions in ravines and on roads, increasing the risk of further incidents.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary travel and remain alert, particularly during peak hours as the working and school day begins.

With Storm Therese still active over the Canary Islands, officials warn that the situation remains unpredictable and that additional incidents cannot be ruled out in the coming hours.
