The Canary Islands remain on alert as unstable weather persists: strong winds, rain and rough seas expected to continue into the weekend

Unsettled Atlantic conditions continue to disrupt normal life across the islands.

Adverse weather conditions continue to affect the Canary Islands this Friday, 10 April, with persistent rain, powerful gusts of wind and hazardous sea conditions keeping much of the archipelago under official warnings. The situation, driven by an unstable atmospheric pattern, shows little sign of improvement in the short term.

According to the State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, a yellow warning has been activated across large parts of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife due to forecast wind gusts that could reach up to 70 kilometres per hour. The unsettled conditions are expected to be accompanied by predominantly overcast skies and rainfall, particularly affecting the northern slopes of the mountainous islands.

Wind alerts concentrated in western islands

The risk of strong northerly winds is especially pronounced on the islands of La Palma, La Gomera, and El Hierro. In these areas, the warning is focused on higher elevations and mid-altitude zones along both eastern and western slopes, where wind intensity is expected to be at its strongest. Lower-lying areas, by contrast, are likely to experience less severe conditions.

In Tenerife, coastal warnings are also in force, particularly affecting the eastern, southern and western coasts. Northerly winds reaching force 7 (between 50 and 61 km/h) are forecast, with the most significant impact expected south of the channel between Tenerife and La Gomera. The south-western tip of Tenerife is likely to bear the brunt of these conditions.

Persistent rain in northern areas

Rainfall will mainly affect the northern parts of the higher islands, where skies will remain heavily overcast and precipitation could become persistent at times. Elsewhere, intervals of cloud are expected, with only a slight chance of occasional showers.

On Gran Canaria, the most unstable weather will be concentrated in the north and west of the island, where rain may also persist throughout the day. Meanwhile, in the eastern islands of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, skies will remain mostly cloudy, with a possibility of light rain during the early hours, gradually giving way to more variable cloud cover as the day progresses.

Temperatures steady, with frost at higher altitudes

Temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged across the archipelago. Maximum values will hover around 21°C in urban centres such as Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. However, significantly colder conditions are forecast at higher elevations, with frost expected on Mount Teide and minimum temperatures dropping to around 9°C on El Hierro.

Warnings to intensify on Saturday

The current weather situation is set to persist into the weekend. For Saturday, Aemet has not only maintained but extended the warnings across additional areas. Strong wind alerts, with gusts of up to 70 km/h, will also affect Gran Canaria, particularly in mountainous regions and along eastern and western slopes, as well as Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

In Tenerife, conditions are expected to become particularly severe in high-altitude areas and along the southern slopes of the metropolitan region. In central mountainous zones, wind gusts could exceed 90 km/h during the early hours of Saturday.

With the risk level remaining elevated across the entire archipelago, authorities continue to urge caution, especially in coastal areas and exposed high ground, where the combined effects of wind and sea conditions may pose significant hazards.
