AEMET maintains weather warnings across the Canary Islands: strong winds and rough seas prompt calls for caution

Adverse conditions are expected to impact both coastal areas and inland regions of the islands throughout the day.

Adverse weather conditions continue to affect the Canary Islands this Monday, 13 April 2026, as strong winds and hazardous sea conditions persist across much of the archipelago. Authorities are urging residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution, particularly in exposed coastal and high-altitude areas.

According to the State Meteorological Agency, AEMET, yellow warnings remain in force for both wind and coastal phenomena. Forecasts indicate the likelihood of very strong gusts and increasingly rough seas in several regions, with conditions expected to remain unstable throughout the day.

Strong gusts in elevated and exposed areas

The most intense wind activity is forecast for mountainous terrain, including peaks and slopes on the south-eastern and north-western sides of the higher islands. These areas are expected to experience particularly strong gusts, which could lead to localised incidents.

In addition, inland areas of Lanzarote may also be affected by powerful wind bursts. Across the archipelago, winds will predominantly blow from the north-east, generally at moderate strength but with occasional strong gusts capable of disrupting normal activity.

Rough seas along north-eastern coasts

Alongside the wind, sea conditions are set to deteriorate. AEMET has issued warnings for coastal phenomena, highlighting the risk of rough seas, especially along north-east facing coastlines.

The combination of wind and swell is expected to generate significant wave activity, potentially complicating navigation and increasing the danger for coastal activities. The situation is likely to be most challenging during periods of peak wind intensity.

Authorities advise avoiding areas exposed to strong waves and strictly following all safety recommendations issued by local services.

Variable cloud cover with isolated showers

Weather conditions inland will vary across the islands. In Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, skies will begin the day mostly cloudy, gradually clearing to intervals of sunshine as the day progresses, although cloud cover may increase again later in the afternoon.

In the northern parts of the mountainous islands, cloud cover will be more persistent, particularly in Gran Canaria, where overcast conditions are expected to dominate. There is also a possibility of light rainfall in mid-altitude areas during the first half of the day.

Elsewhere across the archipelago, skies will remain partly cloudy or mostly clear.

Stable temperatures across the islands

Temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged. Minimum values will hover around 17°C in both Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Daytime highs will reach approximately 20°C in Las Palmas and up to 22°C in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, maintaining a mild spring climate despite the unsettled conditions.

Safety recommendations in force

Given the persistence of strong winds and rough seas, authorities are calling for heightened vigilance. Residents are advised to secure loose objects that could be displaced by gusts, avoid unnecessary travel through exposed areas, and exercise particular caution on roads, beaches, promenades and near port facilities.

With the weather warnings still active and conditions remaining unstable, the emphasis remains firmly on prevention and safety across the Canary Islands.
