The arrival of calima—fine dust carried from the African continent—has become one of the most prominent features of the day. According to the AEMET, this suspended dust is expected to affect primarily mid-altitude and high-altitude areas, where it may reduce visibility and contribute to a noticeably higher perceived temperature.
At the same time, temperatures are on the rise across the islands. The increase will be particularly significant in inland areas of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, as well as in the mid-altitude zones of southern and western Gran Canaria. In these locations, thermometers could exceed 30°C—an unusually high figure for April and more typical of the summer months.
Minimum temperatures, by contrast, are forecast to remain largely stable, with only slight variations expected overnight.
Cloud cover and shifting winds

Sky conditions across the archipelago will generally be marked by high cloud cover, creating a hazy appearance throughout much of the day. In the early hours, intervals of low cloud are expected in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the northern slopes of the higher islands.
Wind patterns will vary depending on location. Coastal areas will experience moderate north-easterly winds, while stronger gusts are likely in south-eastern and north-western parts of the islands, particularly during the early part of the day. In mid-altitude regions and on the summits, winds are expected to shift towards a southerly direction at times, with moderate intervals. Meanwhile, south-western coasts will see lighter breezes.
Government activates pre-alert measures

In response to this latest calima episode, the Canary Islands Government issued a pre-alert declaration on Thursday, covering all islands. The decision was taken based on forecasts from AEMET and in coordination with the PEFMA, the region’s emergency response framework for adverse weather conditions.
Authorities are advising residents to remain cautious, particularly in areas where reduced visibility, strong gusts, and elevated temperatures may combine to create more challenging conditions throughout the day.
