AEMET signals a change in the Canary Islands: haze begins to clear as rain returns

Cloud cover will increase through the day, bringing a chance of light, scattered rain, especially in inland and eastern areas of the islands.

Weather conditions across the Canary Islands are beginning to shift, marking a transition away from recent hazy skies towards a more unsettled pattern. According to the latest forecast from the AEMET, the calima affecting the archipelago is gradually dissipating, while cloud cover and the likelihood of light rainfall increase.

Increasing cloud cover with light rain expected

Throughout the day, skies will be characterised by intervals of cloud, becoming more overcast in inland areas and across eastern parts of the islands as the afternoon progresses. These cloudier conditions may bring occasional light rain, particularly during the early morning and later in the evening.

This change reflects a broader atmospheric adjustment, as the drier, dust-laden air gives way to more humid conditions conducive to precipitation.

Stable temperatures with slight variations

Temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable, with only minor fluctuations. In Tenerife, maximum temperatures will reach around 23°C, while on El Hierro minimum temperatures could drop to approximately 13°C.

Across Gran Canaria, temperatures will also show little variation or may decrease slightly, especially in inland areas where the cooling effect of increased cloud cover will be more noticeable. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, values are forecast to range between 18°C and 22°C.

Island-by-island outlook

  • Gran Canaria: The day will feature intervals of cloud, becoming predominantly overcast inland and in eastern areas during the afternoon. There is a chance of occasional light rain later in the day.
  • Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: Cloudy periods are expected, with the possibility of light rain during the morning hours. As the day progresses, skies are likely to clear, giving way to sunnier conditions around midday before clouds return later.
  • Western islands: Conditions will follow a similar pattern of variable cloudiness, with the highest likelihood of light precipitation occurring at the beginning and end of the day.

Wind shifting direction

Winds will generally be light to moderate, initially blowing from the north-west. As the day advances, they are expected to veer towards the north, particularly during the afternoon. This shift in wind direction is consistent with the broader change in atmospheric conditions affecting the islands.

Transition towards a more variable pattern

Overall, the forecast points to a gradual departure from the recent dominance of calima, with clearer air and increasing cloudiness signalling a return to more typical, variable weather conditions. While rainfall will be light and sporadic, it marks the beginning of a more unsettled phase across the Canary Islands.
