Weather update: AEMET confirms rain across the Canary Islands during the May bank holiday

Cloud cover will increase during the central hours of the day, with a slight chance of light showers, particularly in eastern and inland areas.

The latest forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) points to a more unsettled outlook across the Canary Islands as the May bank holiday approaches, with cloud cover and the possibility of light rain affecting several parts of the archipelago this Thursday.

Although conditions will remain generally mild, the presence of increasing cloud and occasional showers signals a slight shift away from the more stable weather seen in recent days.

Cloudy intervals with light rain, especially in the east

According to AEMET, skies will be characterised by intervals of cloud across most islands, with a low but notable probability of light rain developing during the middle of the day. These showers are expected to be most frequent in eastern areas and inland zones, where local conditions favour cloud formation.

On Gran Canaria, for example, cloud cover will dominate much of the day, with a slight chance of light rain affecting inland areas and the eastern slopes during the central hours. A similar pattern is forecast for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, where cloudy intervals will prevail and isolated showers cannot be ruled out, particularly in the east around midday.

Temperatures remain stable with slight variations

Temperatures across the archipelago will show little overall change. Minimum values are expected to remain steady, while maximum temperatures may experience slight increases, especially in the northern mid-altitude areas.

Across the islands, temperatures will range from highs of around 23°C in Tenerife to cooler lows of approximately 12°C in El Hierro. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, readings are expected to fluctuate between 16°C and 22°C, maintaining a mild and comfortable feel despite the cloud cover.

Light winds with breezier conditions at midday

Wind conditions will generally be light, predominantly blowing from the north-east during the early morning and late evening hours. As the day progresses, breezier conditions are expected to develop, particularly during the middle of the day.

In the central mountain ranges, winds will shift direction, becoming moderate from the west, adding some variability to the overall atmospheric pattern.

A typically variable spring scenario

This weather pattern reflects the transitional nature of the current season, where periods of cloud and occasional light rain can interrupt otherwise stable conditions. While rainfall is expected to remain weak and localised, it may be enough to affect outdoor plans, particularly in inland and eastern areas during peak hours.

Overall, the Canary Islands will experience a slightly more changeable bank holiday period, with clouds, light winds and sporadic showers shaping a mild but less settled atmosphere.
