Weather in the Canary Islands: AEMET warns of continued heat and rising temperatures in higher areas

Temperatures will rise in mid-altitude and mountainous areas while the Canary Islands maintain generally stable weather conditions.

The latest forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) indicates that the current spell of warm weather across the Canary Islands is set to persist, with Sunday bringing generally stable conditions but noticeable variations depending on altitude and location.

While much of the archipelago will enjoy relatively calm and mild weather, the evolution of cloud cover and rising temperatures in elevated areas will be the key features of the day.

Stable conditions with cloud development in the north

Across most islands, the day will begin with partly cloudy skies, creating a predominantly settled atmosphere. However, AEMET forecasts an increase in cloud cover along the northern and eastern slopes, particularly during the early morning and late evening hours.

In the central hours of the day, cloud formation may also develop over inland areas of the more mountainous islands, especially in the western province. Although no significant rainfall is expected, these clouds could temporarily obscure sunshine, particularly in higher-altitude regions.

Temperatures rise in mid-altitude zones and peaks

One of the most notable aspects of the forecast is the behaviour of temperatures. AEMET expects a slight to moderate increase in temperatures in mid-altitude areas and on the mountain peaks, especially across the islands of the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

In contrast, coastal areas and lower elevations across the rest of the archipelago will see little change, maintaining the mild, spring-like conditions that have characterised recent days. This variation highlights the influence of altitude on temperature distribution across the islands.

Trade winds continue to shape conditions

Wind patterns will remain dominated by the trade winds. On the eastern islands—Lanzarote and Fuerteventura—winds will blow from the north-east at moderate strength, particularly noticeable in exposed areas.

Meanwhile, on the western islands, wind speeds will be significantly lighter, contributing to a more stable and comfortable atmosphere overall.

A sharp contrast with mainland Spain

While the Canary Islands experience relatively calm conditions, the situation across mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands is markedly different. AEMET has issued yellow weather warnings in several regions, including Castile and León, Castile-La Mancha, Murcia, Navarre, the Basque Country, La Rioja and the Valencian Community.

These areas are expected to face unsettled weather, with overcast skies, showers, and the possibility of storms accompanied by hail. In northern regions, temperatures may even drop enough for snowfall at higher elevations, creating a stark contrast with the mild and stable conditions in the Canary Islands.

Island-by-island outlook

  • Province of Las Palmas: In Gran Canaria, cloudy skies will persist in the north before clearing later in the day. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will remain mostly clear, with occasional low cloud.
  • Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: Increased cloud cover is expected in northern and inland areas, particularly on the mountainous islands. The rise in temperatures will be most noticeable inland and on the peaks, including areas around Mount Teide.

A warm and stable outlook with localised variation

Overall, the Canary Islands will continue to enjoy stable weather conditions, with only minor fluctuations driven by cloud development and altitude. The persistence of warmer temperatures in mid-altitude zones and on mountain peaks signals the continuation of the current heat pattern, even as other parts of Spain face far more unsettled and volatile weather.

For residents and visitors alike, the forecast points to a largely pleasant Sunday, albeit with increasing warmth in elevated areas and occasional cloud cover in the north.
