Umbrella Friday in the Canary Islands: Aemet forecasts rain, cloud and strong gusts

Cloudy skies, light rain and strong northerly gusts will shape Friday’s weather in the Canary Islands, especially across northern and higher-altitude areas.

The Canary Islands are heading into an unsettled Friday, with umbrellas likely to be useful in several parts of the Archipelago. According to the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), the day will be marked by cloudy intervals, overcast skies in northern areas and the possibility of light rainfall, particularly on the more exposed slopes.

Cloud cover is expected to be most persistent in the north during the day, while inland areas may also see more overcast conditions around midday and during the afternoon. Although widespread or heavy rain is not expected, Aemet does not rule out light precipitation in northern areas, especially in the northeast. Occasional showers may also appear in southern areas during the afternoon.

Temperatures will remain largely unchanged across the islands. Maximum values are expected to reach around 25°C in Tenerife, while the lowest temperatures may fall to around 13°C on El Hierro.

Moderate northerly winds and strong gusts

The wind will blow moderately from the north, although stronger gusts are expected in several exposed areas. These may affect the far west of the islands, low-lying areas in the east, and mid- and high-altitude zones along the mountain ranges.

In these areas, very strong gusts cannot be ruled out, particularly where the terrain accelerates the wind. On the southwest coasts, however, breezes are expected to predominate, offering somewhat calmer conditions compared with the more exposed slopes and summits.

Gran Canaria: cloudy north and possible light rain

In Gran Canaria, the northern half of the island will see mostly cloudy skies throughout the day. The rest of the island will have partly cloudy conditions, with occasional clearer spells in the south around midday and during the afternoon.

Aemet also forecasts the possibility of light and occasional rain in the north of the island. Temperatures will remain stable overall, although maximum values may fall slightly in higher areas. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures are expected to range between 18°C and 23°C.

The wind in Gran Canaria will also blow moderately from the north, with strong gusts on the eastern and western slopes, as well as on the summits. These gusts are expected to be more noticeable during the afternoon, when occasional very strong winds cannot be ruled out. Breezes will prevail along the southern coast.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: cloudy spells and slight chance of rain

In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, cloudy spells will dominate the day, although rainfall is expected to remain limited. Aemet indicates a low probability of light and occasional rain, mainly in the more exposed areas.

Overall, Friday’s weather will be typical of a more unstable trade-wind pattern, with cloudier skies in the north, occasional light showers, moderate northerly winds and stronger gusts in exposed zones. While the day is not expected to bring severe weather, residents and visitors should be prepared for changing conditions, especially in northern, inland and elevated areas.
