Canary Islands face Thursday with strong winds and heat as Aemet forecasts temperatures of up to 30°C

Strong winds, gusts above 80 km/h and temperatures up to 30°C will shape Thursday’s weather in the Canary Islands.

The Canary Islands will experience a Thursday marked by a combination of rising temperatures, mostly clear skies in many areas and strong north-easterly winds, with very strong gusts expected in exposed zones. According to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), temperatures may locally reach 30°C, particularly in southern and mid-altitude areas.

The weather forecast for this Thursday points to a clear contrast between the north and the rest of the Archipelago. In northern areas, especially in the low-lying north-east, intervals of cloud are expected and cloud cover may predominate at times. Elsewhere, however, skies will remain mostly clear or only partly cloudy.

Minimum temperatures will remain largely unchanged, while maximum temperatures will rise slightly. The increase will be most noticeable in sunnier and more sheltered areas, where the influence of the sea is weaker and heat can build more easily during the day.

In the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures will range between a high of around 27°C on Tenerife and a low of 16°C on El Hierro. On the southern coast of the Tenerife metropolitan area, values could locally reach 30°C.

Strong north-easterly wind and gusts above 80 km/h

Wind will be one of the most important features of the day. Aemet forecasts moderate north-easterly winds across the Canary Islands, but with strong gusts in several exposed areas.

The strongest winds are expected on the peaks, the south-eastern slopes and the far west of the islands. In these areas, very strong gusts of up to 70 km/h are expected, and they may locally exceed 80 km/h.

Very strong gusts also cannot be ruled out on the southern slopes of the Tenerife metropolitan area. These conditions may be especially noticeable in open spaces, higher ground, exposed roads and areas where the terrain accelerates the wind.

On the western coasts, breezes will be more common, bringing calmer conditions compared with the most exposed slopes and peaks.

Gran Canaria: cloudy north and warmer southern midlands

In Gran Canaria, the north of the island will remain cloudy below approximately 800 to 1,000 metres. There is also a low probability of occasional drizzle in the mid-altitude areas during the late afternoon.

In the rest of the island, skies will be partly cloudy or clear, with brighter conditions especially in southern and western areas.

Minimum temperatures will remain largely unchanged, while maximum temperatures will rise slightly. Aemet forecasts that temperatures could locally reach 30°C in the mid-altitude areas of the southern slopes.

In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures will range between 19°C and 23°C.

Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: cloudier in the north and west

On Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, cloudy skies will predominate in the north and west of both islands. In the remaining areas, conditions will be partly cloudy, although some cloudy intervals may appear during the early and late hours of the day.

The temperature pattern will remain stable overall, with maximum values rising slightly. The warmer conditions will be more noticeable away from the more exposed coastal areas.

Very strong gusts possible on Gran Canaria

The wind in Gran Canaria will blow moderately from the north-east, but it will become strong in exposed areas on the south-eastern and western slopes, as well as on the peaks.

Very strong gusts are expected in these areas, particularly during the middle of the day. This pattern is typical of north-easterly trade winds in the Canary Islands, where the relief of the islands can intensify the wind in certain corridors and on exposed slopes.

On the south-western coasts, breezes will prevail, offering more sheltered and calmer conditions.

Overall, Thursday will bring a mixed weather pattern to the Canary Islands: cloudier skies in the north, mostly clear conditions elsewhere, slightly rising temperatures and strong winds in exposed areas. The highest temperatures may reach 30°C locally, while the strongest gusts could exceed 80 km/h in the most wind-prone zones.
