The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued its weather forecast for this Tuesday in the Canary Islands, with a day shaped by the influence of strong gusts of the trade winds and clear contrasts between the northern and southern areas of the islands.
The forecast points to predominantly cloudy skies in several northern areas, especially during the first and last hours of the day. In some mid-altitude zones, light and occasional showers or drizzle cannot be ruled out. At the same time, the southern and more sheltered areas will see clearer skies and warmer conditions, with temperatures locally reaching 30°C in parts of the eastern province.
Wind will be one of the main features of the day. Aemet expects moderate trade winds across much of the Archipelago, becoming stronger in exposed areas, especially on the south-eastern and north-western slopes of the islands. In these zones, occasional very strong gusts may occur.
Weather in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife
In the western province, the day will begin with more cloud in the north of the islands. These cloudy skies will be most noticeable during the early hours, particularly in areas exposed to the trade winds.
As the day progresses, the cloud cover is expected to decrease, with clearer spells developing around the middle of the day. In the rest of the province, clear skies will generally prevail, especially in southern and western areas.
Aemet does not rule out occasional light showers in north-east-facing mid-altitude areas, particularly towards the end of the day. Any rainfall is expected to be weak and localised.
Temperatures will remain largely unchanged across the province. The highest values will be recorded on Tenerife, where thermometers are expected to reach around 26°C. The lowest temperature is forecast for El Hierro, with a minimum of 13°C.
Trade winds and very strong gusts in exposed areas
The wind will blow moderately from the trade-wind direction across most of the islands in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
However, it will strengthen in specific areas, particularly on the south-eastern slopes and in the far north-west. In these zones, Aemet warns that occasional very strong gusts are likely.
The strongest gusts will be most noticeable in exposed areas and places where the terrain accelerates the wind. On the western and south-western slopes of the central peaks, breezes will prevail, bringing calmer conditions compared with the more wind-exposed areas.
Forecast for the province of Las Palmas
In the province of Las Palmas, the weather pattern will be similar, although temperatures will vary depending on the orientation and altitude of each area.
On Gran Canaria, cloudy skies will predominate in the north below approximately 800 to 900 metres. During the middle of the day, some clearer spells are expected, although by late afternoon there will be a low probability of occasional drizzle in the mid-altitude areas.
In the rest of the island, skies will remain partly cloudy or completely clear. The southern and western areas will therefore see brighter and warmer conditions than the north.
Lanzarote and Fuerteventura: cloudy north and west, brighter later
On Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the forecast indicates cloudier skies in the north and west during the first part of the day.
As the afternoon progresses, sunny spells are expected to become more widespread. On the southern slopes of both islands, skies will be partly cloudy during the middle of Tuesday, with no major weather disruptions expected.
Temperatures will remain generally stable across the eastern province. However, the warmest values may be recorded on Gran Canaria, where temperatures could locally reach 30°C in the mid-altitude areas of the east, south and west. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, thermometers are expected to range between a minimum of 20°C and a maximum of 23°C.
Strong trade winds in the eastern province
The wind will continue to follow the same trade-wind pattern in the province of Las Palmas. It will blow moderately in general, but will become stronger in exposed areas.
The south-eastern and north-western slopes of the islands will be the most affected by strong winds and occasional very strong gusts. Aemet also does not rule out intense gusts in the highlands during the early hours of the morning.
In the south-western areas, breezes will predominate, creating calmer conditions compared with the windier slopes and higher terrain.
Overall, Tuesday’s weather in the Canary Islands will be defined by cloudy northern areas, possible light rain in mid-altitude zones, clear skies elsewhere, stable temperatures in most places and summer-like values of up to 30°C in parts of Gran Canaria. The trade winds will remain active and may produce very strong gusts in exposed areas of several islands.
