The first Sunday of summer will bring generally pleasant weather to the Canary Islands, with temperatures well suited to outdoor activities across much of the archipelago. The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued its forecast for this Sunday, 21 June 2026, confirming mainly clear skies and a slight rise in temperatures, especially in inland areas.
Despite the increase, the Canary Islands are not expected to be affected by high-temperature warnings. This contrasts with large parts of mainland Spain, where a heatwave is forecast to arrive over the coming hours.
Across the islands, the day will begin with the usual cloudy intervals in the low-lying northern areas of the higher-relief islands. These clouds are typical of the trade-wind pattern and will be most noticeable during the early hours of the morning and again towards the end of the day.
However, the cloud cover is expected to break up quickly by mid-morning, giving way to brighter and sunnier conditions. During the central hours of Sunday, mostly clear or only partly cloudy skies will predominate across almost the entire archipelago.
In southern and eastern areas, as well as on the easternmost islands, clear skies will be the main feature from the start of the day. This will leave much of the Canary Islands with a distinctly summery atmosphere, marked by sunshine, stable conditions and only limited cloud cover.
Temperatures to rise slightly, especially inland
Temperatures are expected to increase slightly compared with previous days. The rise will be most noticeable in maximum temperatures in inland areas, where the heat will be felt more clearly during the middle of the day.
Even so, values will remain moderate in comparison with the more intense heat expected in other parts of Spain. The influence of the trade winds and the surrounding Atlantic will continue to help temper the heat across many coastal areas.
The forecast shows some differences between the two Canarian capitals. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, a warm day is expected, with temperatures ranging between 20°C and 28°C in the shade. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, conditions will be somewhat milder and more stable, with a minimum temperature of 20°C and a maximum of around 25°C.
Trade winds to gain strength during the afternoon
As for the wind, Aemet forecasts a north-easterly flow, following the usual trade-wind pattern. During the first half of the day, the wind will generally blow with light to moderate intensity.
However, conditions are expected to change as the afternoon progresses. The wind will gradually increase in strength and may become occasionally strong in the north-western and south-eastern extremes of the more mountainous islands.
These stronger gusts may be especially noticeable in exposed areas and in zones where the terrain tends to accelerate the wind. Caution is therefore advised for maritime activities and in coastal or elevated areas affected by late-afternoon gusts.
Overall, Sunday will bring stable and mostly sunny weather to the Canary Islands, with slightly higher temperatures and the trade winds becoming more noticeable during the second half of the day.
