The State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, has issued a heat warning for the Canary Islands this Monday, 6 July 2026, as temperatures are expected to rise significantly across parts of the archipelago. The highest values will be recorded in inland and mid-altitude areas, with temperatures reaching up to 37°C in Gran Canaria and 34°C in Tenerife.
The day will be marked by mostly clear skies across the islands, although light haze is expected at higher altitudes. The rise in temperatures will be especially noticeable away from the coast, while northern, western and southern coastal areas will experience more gradual changes.
In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures are expected to remain more stable, with a maximum of around 25°C. The lowest values in the archipelago will be recorded in El Hierro, where temperatures may drop to around 19°C.
The areas most affected by the heat
The mass of warm air affecting the Canary Islands will not have the same impact across the entire archipelago. The highest temperatures will be concentrated mainly in inland and mid-altitude areas, especially in zones facing south, south-east and west.
In the province of Las Palmas, the most affected areas will be in Gran Canaria. The Tejeda basin and the mid-altitude areas facing south-east, south and west are expected to record the highest temperatures, with maximum values reaching up to 37°C.
The heat will also be noticeable overnight. In these inland areas of Gran Canaria, minimum temperatures are expected to remain very high, barely falling below 26°C or 27°C. These tropical nights will make it difficult for temperatures to cool down and may increase the feeling of discomfort, especially in homes without adequate ventilation or cooling.
In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, clear skies will prevail for most of the day. However, some cloudy intervals are expected along the western coasts during the early and late hours.
In the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the highest temperatures will be recorded in the mid-altitude areas of the west, south and east of Tenerife, as well as in the metropolitan area of the capital. In these zones, temperatures may reach 34°C.
In the north of Tenerife and in parts of the eastern coastline, temperatures may also exceed 30°C, although this will occur in a more localised way.
Moderate trade winds with strong gusts in exposed areas
The wind will follow the usual summer pattern in the Canary Islands. According to Aemet, winds will blow from the north at moderate strength across much of the archipelago.
However, strong gusts are expected overnight in some exposed areas, particularly at the north-eastern and south-western extremes of the western islands.
In Gran Canaria, the north wind will become more noticeable, especially at the eastern and western extremes of the island. In these areas, strong gusts are expected, and occasional very strong gusts cannot be ruled out.
On the mountain peaks, the wind will tend to ease and become light. In Tenerife, it will blow lightly from the south-west, while in Gran Canaria it will tend to blow from the south.
Overall, this Monday will bring another hot summer day to the Canary Islands, with the most intense heat concentrated in inland and mid-altitude areas. Gran Canaria will record the highest temperatures, while parts of Tenerife will also experience values above 30°C. Aemet also warns that very warm nights in the most affected areas may offer little relief after sunset.
