The Canary Islands will continue to experience high temperatures this Friday, 17 July, with heat, light haze in higher areas and very warm nights in the areas most affected. According to the State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, temperatures will remain largely unchanged across the archipelago, although some inland areas will see a slight or moderate drop.
The forecast points to cloudy skies in the north of the more mountainous islands at altitudes below 800 to 1,000 metres, with extensive clear spells during the middle of the day. Elsewhere, skies will be partly cloudy or clear, although light haze is expected in higher areas.
Temperatures will continue to be high for the time of year, with maximum values ranging from around 32°C in Tenerife to lower values of around 16°C in El Hierro. In the areas most exposed to the heat, particularly in parts of Gran Canaria, temperatures may climb even higher.
Winds will blow from the north-east, with strong gusts at times on the eastern slopes, the north-western tip and in higher areas. In the summit areas, light to moderate south-westerly winds will prevail, while breezes are expected along the western coasts.
Gran Canaria may reach 34°C in the hottest areas
In the province of Las Palmas, the forecast for Friday points to cloudy skies in the north of Gran Canaria at altitudes below 600 to 800 metres, with clear spells opening up during the central hours of the day. In the rest of the province, skies will be partly cloudy or clear, again with light haze in higher areas.
In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, Aemet expects partly cloudy or clear skies, with cloudy intervals in western areas during the night.
Minimum temperatures will fall moderately in inland areas, while remaining largely unchanged along the coast. Maximum temperatures will continue to drop in inland areas of the north and across much of the south. On the coast, values will remain similar or fall slightly.
Despite this gradual easing, temperatures may still reach 34°C in the mid-altitude areas of the Tirajana basin, as well as in the south-east and in the lower areas of the Tejeda basin. In the rest of the south- and west-facing areas, temperatures are expected to exceed 30°C.
The heat will also continue during the night. In the areas most affected, minimum temperatures are unlikely to fall below 24°C to 26°C, creating tropical nights and making it difficult for the atmosphere to cool down. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures will range between a minimum of 23°C and a maximum of 27°C.
Strong north-easterly winds in exposed areas
The wind will be another notable feature of the forecast. In Gran Canaria, a strong north-easterly wind will affect the north-western and south-eastern slopes, where locally very strong gusts are likely. Along the south-western coast, breezes will be more noticeable, helping to moderate conditions slightly in some coastal areas.
Overall, the Canary Islands will remain under the influence of warm conditions, with light haze in higher areas, temperatures above 30°C in several southern and western zones, and tropical nights in the most affected parts of Gran Canaria.
