The Canary Islands will experience a sunny and warm Wednesday, marked by mostly clear skies, calima at higher altitudes and a gradual rise in temperatures. According to the State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, maximum temperatures may reach or exceed 30°C to 32°C in several areas of the archipelago, especially in the south and west of Gran Canaria.
The weather will also be influenced by a moderate north-easterly wind. However, this wind may become more intense in exposed areas, producing occasional very strong gusts on the south-eastern and north-western slopes of the higher islands. Stronger gusts are also expected in inland areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, particularly during the night.
Where the heat and calima will be most noticeable
Airborne dust will affect all the islands, mainly at higher altitudes, giving the sky a hazy appearance in several areas. Despite the presence of calima, sunny conditions will dominate across most of the Canary Islands.
Low cloud is expected only along the northern coasts during the early morning and late evening. From midday onwards, skies will tend to clear, leaving more open and sunnier conditions across the archipelago.
Gran Canaria will once again be one of the areas most affected by the heat. Daytime temperatures are expected to approach 32°C in the southern valleys and on the western slopes. In Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro, temperatures may approach or locally reach 30°C, particularly in the southern and western mid-altitude areas.
The combination of rising temperatures, dry air and suspended dust may increase the sensation of heat, especially away from the coast and in areas less exposed to the cooling effect of the trade winds.
Sea conditions: risk along exposed coasts
Aemet also warns of worsening sea conditions offshore. Northerly winds are expected to strengthen to force seven along the south-eastern and western coasts, generating strong swells that may become heavy offshore.
Along the northern coasts of the islands, light to moderate swells are expected, with a north-easterly swell of up to two metres. Meanwhile, southern beaches will remain more sheltered, with mainly light breezes and choppy seas.
Even so, the forecast points to more complicated conditions in exposed maritime areas, particularly where the wind accelerates and the swell increases offshore.
Island-by-island weather forecast
Tenerife
Tenerife will see mostly sunny skies, although cloudy intervals are expected along the northern coast during the early and late hours of the day. Calima will be present at higher elevations.
Temperatures will approach 30°C in the metropolitan area and in the south of the island. Strong gusts may occur in the south-east and far north-west towards the end of the day. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, temperatures will range between 23°C and 30°C.
Gran Canaria
Gran Canaria will have mostly clear skies, apart from morning mist or low cloud along the northern coast. Temperatures will rise, exceeding 32°C on the western slopes and in the southern interior.
A strong north-easterly wind is expected in the south-east and west of the island, where gusts may be intense at times. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, temperatures will range between 23°C and 26°C.
Lanzarote
Lanzarote will have generally clear skies, although mist or cloud may enter from the west at dawn. Calima will remain present at higher altitudes.
The wind will be strong inland, with very intense gusts expected during the night. Maximum temperatures may reach 30°C in the south of the island. In Arrecife, temperatures will range between 22°C and 29°C.
Fuerteventura
Fuerteventura will see clear skies, airborne dust and high temperatures, especially in Jandía and the south, where values may reach 30°C. Moderate to strong winds are expected in inland areas. In Puerto del Rosario, temperatures will range between 21°C and 27°C.
La Palma
La Palma will see sunny conditions, with low cloud in the north and east during the early and late hours. Light calima is also expected.
Temperatures may reach 30°C in the west of the island. Strong winds are forecast in the north-west and south-east, especially in the early morning. In Santa Cruz de La Palma, temperatures will range between 23°C and 27°C.
La Gomera
La Gomera will have mostly clear skies, with occasional cloud in northern areas. Temperatures will rise slightly and may approach 30°C in the south and west. Very strong gusts are possible late in the day in the south-east and west of the island. In San Sebastián de La Gomera, temperatures will range between 23°C and 28°C.
El Hierro
El Hierro will experience sunny conditions, with airborne dust at higher elevations. Temperatures will rise and may reach 30°C in the south of the island. Occasionally very strong gusts are expected in the far south-east and north-west. In Valverde, temperatures will range between 18°C and 21°C.
Overall, Wednesday’s weather in the Canary Islands will be dominated by sunshine, calima at higher altitudes, rising temperatures and strong gusts in exposed areas. The highest values are expected in the south and west of Gran Canaria, while sea conditions may become more difficult along exposed coasts.
