The Canary Islands will see some relief from the heat this Saturday, with temperatures expected to fall in mid-altitude areas and on the peaks after several days of intense heat across the archipelago. According to the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency, Aemet, temperatures will ease in many inland and elevated areas, although the heat will not disappear completely. Thermometers are still expected to reach around 30°C across large parts of the Islands, with localised highs approaching 34°C in the south-east of Gran Canaria.
The day will also be marked by cloudy skies in the north of the islands with higher elevations. In these areas, light and occasional drizzle cannot be ruled out in mid-altitude zones. A moderate north-easterly wind will continue to blow, with periods of strong wind and very intense gusts during the early hours of the morning on exposed slopes.
The drop in temperatures will be moderate or noticeable in south- and west-facing mid-altitude areas, offering some respite after the recent heat episode. However, nights will remain very warm in several parts of the archipelago. In coastal and inland areas of southern Gran Canaria, Tenerife, La Gomera and El Hierro, minimum temperatures are expected to remain around 24°C to 26°C.
Temperatures fall, but the heat persists in the south
In coastal areas and on Lanzarote, temperature changes will be limited. The most noticeable drop will occur inland and on the peaks of the archipelago, where the heat is expected to ease more clearly. Despite this cooling, several low-lying and south-facing areas will remain hot. The south of Gran Canaria, the Tejeda basin and the south-eastern edge of the Tenerife metropolitan area are expected to stay close to 30°C.
Sea conditions will also reflect the continued strength of the north and north-easterly winds. Winds are forecast to reach force 5 or 6, with occasional gusts of force 7. Moderate to heavy swell is expected, together with a northerly swell producing waves between one and two metres.
Light showers in the north and strong winds in the early hours
Skies will remain heavily overcast below 800 to 1,200 metres on the northern slopes of the islands with the highest elevations. This cloud cover will bring a low probability of light rainfall, especially in mid-altitude areas, and the drizzle may become more persistent towards dusk.
Meanwhile, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura will see partly cloudy or mostly clear skies, apart from some patches of low cloud in the north and west during the night and early morning.
The weather this Saturday, island by island
In Tenerife, skies will be cloudy in the north, with a chance of light rain in mid-altitude areas. Temperatures will fall on the peaks and in the south of the island. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the maximum temperature will reach 29°C. Strong gusts of wind are expected in the far south-east, the north-west and the south of the metropolitan area.
In Gran Canaria, the north will remain cloudy, with drizzle possible towards dusk. Heat will persist in the south-east, where temperatures may reach 32°C to 34°C, while minimum temperatures in some areas will remain between 24°C and 26°C. A marked drop in temperatures is expected on the mountain peaks. In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the maximum temperature will be around 27°C.
In Lanzarote, cloudy spells are expected in the north and west, although the skies will tend to clear as the day progresses. Maximum temperatures will reach around 30°C in the south-east and in Arrecife.
In Fuerteventura, skies will be partly cloudy. Temperatures will fall moderately in the south-east, where maximum values will remain close to 30°C. In Puerto del Rosario, the maximum temperature is expected to reach 27°C.
In La Palma, skies will be cloudy in the north and east, with a chance of drizzle. Temperatures will fall inland. In Santa Cruz de La Palma, the maximum temperature will be around 27°C.
In La Gomera, low cloud is expected in the north, with light rain likely in mid-altitude areas. Maximum temperatures will reach around 30°C in the low-lying areas of the south. In San Sebastián de La Gomera, the maximum will be 27°C.
In El Hierro, cloudy spells are expected in the north, while the rest of the island will see clearer skies. Temperatures may reach 30°C in the south, while Valverde will record minimum temperatures of around 18°C.
Although the most intense heat is expected to ease, Aemet’s forecast shows that the archipelago will continue to experience warm nights, strong trade winds and localised high temperatures, especially in southern and south-eastern areas.
