The Canary Islands are set for a change in the weather this Sunday, with cloudier skies, possible light rainfall and a drop in temperatures across parts of the archipelago, according to the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency, Aemet.
The day will begin with cloudy spells that are expected to develop into overcast skies in several areas. Light rainfall is likely in the northern mid-altitude zones, particularly in the north-east during the first half of the day. In the afternoon, rainfall may also affect southern mid-altitude areas.
Temperatures will fall mainly in higher-altitude areas, while remaining largely unchanged elsewhere. Across the archipelago, thermometers are expected to range from highs of around 29°C in Tenerife to minimum temperatures of 18°C on El Hierro.
The wind will blow from the north-east and may become occasionally strong on the south-eastern slopes and in the far north-west of the islands. In the central mountain ranges, winds will generally remain light and blow from the west.
Cloud and light rain in the north of the Canary Islands
Cloud cover will be most noticeable in northern areas, where light rainfall is likely in the mid-altitude zones of Gran Canaria, especially during the early hours of the morning.
The rest of the archipelago will see more stable conditions, with mostly clear skies in several areas, according to Aemet.
Temperatures will drop in mountain areas and remain broadly unchanged in lower-lying zones. Maximum temperatures will range from around 28°C in Lanzarote, while minimum temperatures may remain around 23°C in Fuerteventura.
The north-easterly wind will continue to affect the islands, becoming occasionally strong on the south-eastern and north-western slopes.
Although the rain is expected to be light, Sunday’s forecast marks a noticeable shift after the recent spell of hot and dry weather, especially in higher and northern parts of the Canary Islands.
