Aemet forecasts temperatures of up to 30°C and calima in the Canary Islands, with rainfall not ruled out

The Canary Islands will remain warm, with light calima, possible inland showers, and temperatures reaching up to 30°C in some areas.

The Canary Islands will see another warm day this Tuesday, 29 September, with light haze, temperatures that may locally reach 30°C and the possibility of occasional rainfall in inland areas of the more mountainous islands.

According to the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency Aemet, skies will be generally partly cloudy or clear across much of the archipelago during the day. However, cloud cover is expected to increase in inland areas of the mountainous islands during the afternoon. In these areas, Aemet does not rule out occasional rainfall.

One of the main features of the day will be the presence of light haze at higher altitudes. This will mainly affect mid-altitude areas and the peaks of the more mountainous islands.

The forecast comes after the Canary Islands Government lifted the forest fire risk alert in Gran Canaria, although the pre-alert for wildfire risk remains in place in Gran Canaria and in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Temperatures may reach 30°C locally

Temperatures across the Canary Islands will remain largely unchanged this Tuesday. Even so, Aemet forecasts slight rises in maximum temperatures in inland areas of Tenerife and on the islands belonging to the eastern province.

In these areas, thermometers may locally reach 30°C, especially in mid-altitude and low-lying zones. In the two Canary Islands capitals, temperatures are expected to remain slightly lower. Santa Cruz de Tenerife will record a minimum of 22°C and a maximum of 28°C.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will see similar values, with temperatures ranging between 23°C and 28°C. Although the episode is less intense than the heat recorded in previous days, the combination of warm temperatures, light haze and dry conditions in some areas will continue to shape the weather across the archipelago.

Light haze at higher altitudes

The presence of light calima will be another notable feature of Tuesday’s forecast. The haze will mainly affect higher altitudes, especially the mid-altitude areas and peaks of the mountainous islands.

This suspended dust may reduce visibility slightly in some areas, although the forecast points to generally stable conditions for much of the day. The haze is expected to coexist with mostly clear or partly cloudy skies, before afternoon cloud develops in inland areas.

Wind to turn north in the afternoon

The wind will initially be light and easterly across the Canary Islands. As the day progresses, it will strengthen to moderate intensity and turn northerly during the afternoon.

No major wind episode is forecast, but the shift in direction will be another sign of the gradual change in weather conditions after several days marked by heat, haze and wildfire risk.

Forest fire alert lifted in Gran Canaria

The weather update comes after the Canary Islands Government ended the forest fire risk alert in Gran Canaria. The alert had affected areas above 400 metres across the whole island.

The Directorate-General for Emergencies lifted the measure at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, 28 September, after determining that the meteorological conditions that had justified its activation had come to an end. The lifting of the alert marks an improvement in the fire-risk situation on the island.

Pre-alert remains in force

Despite the end of the alert in Gran Canaria, the pre-alert for forest fire risk remains active in the Western Islands and in Gran Canaria. This pre-alert is linked to the declaration issued on 1 June under the Canary Islands’ Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Response to Forest Fires, known as INFOCA.

The authorities will continue to monitor weather conditions, particularly in areas affected by dry air, higher temperatures and light haze.

Overall, Tuesday will bring a relatively stable but still warm weather pattern to the Canary Islands, with light calima at altitude, temperatures of up to 30°C in some areas and a chance of occasional afternoon rain in the interior of the mountainous islands.
