The town of Los Realejos in Tenerife sells potatoes at “fair prices” today

Los Realejos in Tenerife is selling locally grown potatoes at fair prices this weekend to support local farmers and promote sustainable agriculture.

The mayor of Los Realejos, Adolfo González, and the councillor for Rural Development, Alexis Hernández, announced yesterday that today and tomorrow, the Sociedad Cooperativa Icod de los Trigos, in collaboration with the council, will offer their potato produce at fair prices at the Local Product Market of Los Realejos, located at the Casa de El Llano.

Adolfo González highlighted that “the successful pilot experience on June 29 and 30, where Realejos farmers managed to sell 4,690 kilos of potatoes to customers from the municipality and other parts of the island who came to Los Realejos, has led to this new date. This initiative aims to help farmers sell the new production of their recent harvest. Therefore, this Saturday and Sunday, from 09:00 to 14:00, we will have the opportunity to buy zero-kilometre potatoes directly from the farmer.”

The mayor emphasized the importance and added value of consuming local products for the development of the local economy, the conservation of the agricultural landscape, and the encouragement of farmers. He also highlighted the benefits of better family nutrition through the consumption of products obtained directly from the land.

“We invite everyone to visit the Local Product Market of Los Realejos this weekend and experience the quality of Realejos potatoes at fair prices and without intermediaries,” he stated.

The councillor for Rural Development, Alexis Hernández, reiterated, “We are aware of the challenges faced by the agricultural subsector, including competition with foreign potatoes and other factors. Our commitment as the closest administration is to support their demands.”

The direct-to-consumer sales initiative aims to strengthen the local agricultural sector by offering high-quality products at fair prices, promoting sustainable development, and supporting the farmers of Los Realejos during these challenging times.
