The Canary Islands will see temperatures rise again this Monday, 21 September, with the highest values expected mainly in Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria and Lanzarote.
According to the forecast from the State Meteorological Agency Aemet, the hottest point of the day could be in the southern interior of Fuerteventura, where local temperatures of up to 34°C cannot be ruled out.
The rise in temperatures will also affect parts of Gran Canaria and Lanzarote, where maximum values may reach around 32°C. Tenerife may also exceed 30°C in some areas, especially away from the coast.
The episode will be accompanied by high-altitude calima, particularly over the eastern islands, where suspended dust is expected to be more noticeable during the day.
Fuerteventura: up to 34°C in southern inland areas
Fuerteventura is expected to record the highest temperatures in the Canary Islands this Monday. Aemet forecasts a moderate rise in maximum temperatures across the island, with the increase becoming more pronounced in the southern inland areas.
In these zones, temperatures may exceed 32°C and could locally reach 34°C, making them the hottest areas of the archipelago during the day.
The island will also be affected by calima at higher altitudes. The wind will initially blow from the north-east at light to moderate strength, before increasing in intensity during the second half of the day.
Strong gusts may be recorded on the Jandía peninsula, where the wind is expected to become more noticeable later in the day.
Gran Canaria: 32°C on the southern and western slopes
Gran Canaria will also be one of Monday’s main hotspots. Maximum temperatures are expected to rise slightly or moderately, with the increase becoming especially noticeable in some mid-altitude areas.
The forecast points to values of up to 32°C on the south-eastern, southern and western slopes of the island. High-altitude haze will also become more visible in mid-altitude and high-altitude areas during the second half of the day.
In the north and east of Gran Canaria, there will be more cloud cover during the early hours and again towards the end of the day, while the rest of the island will generally see warmer and clearer conditions.
Lanzarote will also reach 32°C
Lanzarote will also experience high temperatures this Monday. In the north of the island, temperatures will remain largely unchanged. However, inland and southern areas will see a rise in maximum values. In these parts of Lanzarote, temperatures are expected to range between 30°C and 32°C.
The island will also be affected by airborne dust at higher altitudes, in line with the wider presence of calima over the eastern islands. The wind will start the day blowing lightly from the north-east, before becoming moderate during the afternoon.
Tenerife: up to 31°C in Santa Cruz
The rise in temperatures will also be noticeable in Tenerife, especially inland and in mid-altitude areas. Along the coast, temperatures will remain largely unchanged. However, in mid-altitude zones, values are expected to rise moderately, and the increase may be significant in some areas.
Temperatures close to 30°C may be recorded in the southern and eastern mid-altitude areas, as well as on the southern edge of the metropolitan area. In Santa Cruz de Tenerife, the forecast for Monday places temperatures between 22°C and 31°C.
The island will also have a low probability of high-altitude haze during the afternoon and evening.
Another factor to watch will be the wind in the central mountain ranges. It will blow from the south-west with moderate to strong intensity, and very strong gusts are likely during the morning and around midday.
La Gomera may reach 30°C
La Gomera will also see a rise in maximum temperatures, particularly in mid-altitude and high-altitude areas. In parts of the south and east of the island, temperatures may locally reach 30°C.
El Hierro will also record a moderate rise in maximum temperatures inland, while coastal areas will remain largely unchanged.
La Palma, the only island with a chance of rain
La Palma will not see the highest temperatures forecast for the eastern islands, but it will be the only island where rain is possible. Aemet forecasts a low probability of light and occasional rain during the early hours of the morning in the eastern mid-altitude areas.
Temperatures will also rise on La Palma, especially in mid-altitude and high-altitude areas.
Across the Canary Islands as a whole, periods of medium and high cloud will predominate. Low cloud is also expected in the northern and eastern areas of the more mountainous islands during the first half of the day.
Overall, Monday will bring another warm day to the archipelago, with the highest temperatures expected in Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and parts of Tenerife, alongside the presence of high-altitude calima.
