Canary Islands airports see 14% increase in passengers in March, surpassing 5 million

In March, Canary Islands airports recorded a 14.4% increase in passengers from the previous year, reaching nearly 5 million, with significant growth in both domestic and international travel according to Aena data.

In March, Canary Islands airports witnessed a substantial increase in passenger traffic, registering a total of 4,952,941 passengers, which marks a 14.4% rise over the same month in 2023, according to the latest data released by Aena.


The vast majority of these passengers, 4,921,071, were on commercial flights. Of these, 1,761,157 were domestic travellers, showing an 11.8% increase from the previous year, and 3,159,914 were international passengers, up by 17.5% compared to March 2023.

The airports also saw a significant uptick in activity with 42,667 aircraft movements recorded during the month, an 11% increase from March 2023, and the transportation of 2,694 tonnes of goods.

Breaking down by airport, Gran Canaria Airport led with the highest traffic, accommodating 1,479,738 passengers, a 14.7% increase from the previous year. It was closely followed by Tenerife South Airport, which saw 1,346,732 passengers, up 16.2% from 2023. Other airports also showed robust growth: César Manrique-Lanzarote Airport hosted 791,297 passengers (+14.2%), Fuerteventura Airport had 598,861 (+10.5%), and Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna Airport recorded 560,916 (+13.6%).

Smaller airports like La Palma welcomed 138,704 passengers (+16.5%), El Hierro had 26,540 (+14.4%), and La Gomera, though the smallest, saw the most significant percentage increase with 10,153 passengers, up by 28.4% compared to March 2023.

Year-to-date figures also reflect a positive trend, with Canary Islands airports having handled a total of 13,651,816 passengers in the current year, marking a 12.2% increase over the same period last year. Out of these, 4,782,750 were domestic (up 10.1%) and 8,751,925 were international passengers (up 14.4%), underscoring a strong recovery and growth in both segments.
