Canary Islands stay on high temperature alert: duration of this heatwave?

Based on the Aemet forecast, the heat alert in the Canary Islands has been downgraded to a pre-alert as of Monday, with expected maximum temperatures ranging between 28 and 32 degrees Celsius.

Since 10 April, the heat alert in the Canary Islands has been revised to a pre-alert status as of this Monday, with expected maximum temperatures ranging between 28 and 32 degrees Celsius, particularly on the western and southern slopes of the islands.

The Canary Islands Government’s Directorate General for Emergencies made this decision effective from 10:00 AM on Monday, based on weather predictions from Aemet. They have also issued a warning about the unusually high temperatures for this season, which are accompanied by dry conditions and variable amounts of haze.

Starting Tuesday, temperatures are forecasted to gradually decrease and stabilise at normal seasonal levels by mid-week, with no precipitation anticipated during this period.

Canary Islands stay on high temperature alert: duration of this heatwave?

According to Eltiempo.es, the current heatwave is being driven by a strong upper-level ridge and a sturdy surface anticyclone, coupled with clear skies and extended sunlight hours. Additionally, since Thursday, there has been an influx of a very warm and dry air mass from Africa, which has spread over the Canary Islands along with haze.

These high temperatures pose a significant risk of wildfires. In light of this, recommendations have been made to take precautions when exposed to the sun, especially given the high levels of ultraviolet radiation that can occur even now, when skies are clear.
