Unexpected marine life at Las Teresitas in Tenerife: watch your step to avoid harmful encounters

Upon entering the shallower waters at the famous Tenerife beach Las Teresitas, you will encounter various marine species.

In a recent TikTok video, the profile Chaquito Canario introduced viewers to the diverse marine life found at Las Teresitas beach in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The video begins with a captivating question, “Do you know the amount of marine life that Las Teresitas beach harbours?”

As the presenter ventures into the shallower waters, he quickly encounters several marine species. Among these are pejepeine, or spider fish, which he advises viewers to avoid stepping on due to their venomous sting that can cause severe burning pain. He also spots a cucumber fish and discovers polychaete worms, commonly known as plumeros, hidden in the vicinity.

Progressing to the first rock, he observes a variety of fish including a pollock, a grouper, and a cockerel fish nearby. Deeper into the water, he comes across pelagic species like bogas and tenophores. Moving towards the breakwater area, which hosts a concentration of marine life, he explains the ecological recovery following the control of the diadema sea urchin plague a few years ago.

This management has facilitated the growth of algae, creating a nurturing environment that serves as a nursery for young fish. This nursery allows them to safely grow during their initial life stages, eventually continuing the cycle of life started by their parents.
